The system had given them ten minutes to ask any question they could think of, and they intended to use every second. From watching tutorial livestreams on Earth and spending far too much time scrolling social media, Adam and Mei already had a decent understanding of what to expect. At least, they understood what happened in the normal tutorials. This was Impossible difficulty. No one on Earth knew what to expect from it.
The only information that could be shared came from livestreams, and livestreaming within Impossible difficulty was apparently restricted to boss fights. That alone raised more questions than it answered. The first thing Adam wanted to understand was something he technically already knew existed, but still didn't fully grasp because it was completely foreign to Earth. Magic.
"How does using magic work?" he asked.
"I know there aren't any set skills or spells, but I'd like a thorough breakdown." Magic works based on imagination and the level of your Magic rank. By imagining a spell or skill with a specific effect, it will automatically be cast if the caster possesses the requisite Magic rank and sufficient mana.
"The system just interprets what we're trying to do?" Adam asked. Correct.
"Where do classes come in then?" The class interaction between magic determines the effectiveness of a spell or skill. For example, a fire mage who casts a fireball will receive a 50% bonus to effectiveness. However, if that same fire mage casts a water spell, they will receive a 50% reduction in effectiveness.
"Effectiveness?" Adam repeated. Effectiveness determines the overall quality of spells and skills. It increases damage, duration, and secondary effects while simultaneously reducing mana costs. The explanation made sense. A mage could still use magic outside their specialty, but they would be significantly worse at it. For your Shield Healer class, your class effectiveness is restricted to magic barriers, healing spells, and buffing abilities. Offensive spells will receive a 50% reduction in effectiveness.
(Legendary spells are unaffected by effectiveness reductions.) Adam nodded thoughtfully. That limitation wasn't exactly surprising. A support class being bad at offense was common enough in games.
"What about my class?" Mei asked immediately. Your class is unique in that you possess no defensive capabilities. Any attempt to cast a skill that is not classified as an attack will be entirely negated. In return, your bullet-based skills receive a 50% increase in effectiveness in addition to the 25% damage bonus granted by your talents. (A small number of specific spells may still function if they do not fall under the definition of defensive abilities.) Mei blinked.
"So I'm a glass cannon?" Correct.
"Awesome." Adam stared at her. Mei's grin widened.
"Now that's what I'm talking about." Adam decided not to comment on the fact that she seemed far more excited about gaining extra damage than losing access to every form of defense.
"Is the main quest still the same?" he asked.
"Defeating the Demon King?" Yes. The answer appeared instantly. However, it is recommended that you first acclimate yourselves to the world by surviving within the starter area and defeating its boss.
"That sounds suspiciously like a warning," Adam muttered. The system did not elaborate. They spent the remainder of the time asking every question they could think of. Combat mechanics, monsters, classes, mana, equipment, dungeons, leveling. If there was information available, they wanted it. Eventually, the clock became impossible to ignore. The tutorial will begin in 2 minutes... Silence settled between them.
There were still countless things they didn't know, but every question they could think of had already been answered. At this point, there was nothing left to do except wait. Adam chewed his lip nervously while Mei bounced lightly on her heels beside him. She wore an eager expression despite the tension hanging in the air. Two minutes from now, they would become the latest humans to attempt the Impossible Tutorial. Whether that title would become a legendary achievement or an epitaph remained to be seen.
Distributing starter equipment. Please check your inventories.
"Eh? We get starter equipment even on Impossible?" Mei asked, blinking in disbelief. Of course. The tutorial difficulty is set to Impossible, not Unfair.
"Oh. I see." That answer caught both Mei and Adam off guard. Somewhere along the way, they had both assumed that "Impossible" meant absolutely no help whatsoever. No gear, no advantages, nothing but suffering. Apparently, the system had standards.
"Check inventory," Adam said. Adam's Inventory: Weapon: Wooden Staff (Common) - Two-Handed Magic Staff A crudely made staff used to channel magic. It's about as useful as a tree branch, but it's better than nothing. ┐('~`;)┌ Effect: None Empty Space x9"A wooden staff…?" Adam grimaced, turning it over in his mind as if it might magically improve. He had at least hoped for something like a sword or shield. Mei reached over and patted his shoulder.
"It's just starter equipment. Once we start beating bosses, I bet with my luck we'll roll god-tier gear." He gave a reluctant nod, but his attention shifted as the system screen flickered and switched to display her inventory. Mei's Inventory: Weapon: Handgun of the Gunslinger (Rare) - One-Handed Firearm A magic handgun imbued with a myriad of effects, granting it a wide array of functions. Including growth magic! It's infinitely better than the tree branch a certain sidekick rolled.
(^▽^) Effects: Appearance Change Magic - Allows the weapon to take on the appearance of any handgun the user desires Growth Magic - Scales with the user's stats Attachment Magic - Consumes the user's mana to generate attachments that modify performance Gunslinger Unique Weapon - Only usable by someone with the Gunslinger class Survival Tent x1 A compact tent essential for wilderness survival. Room for one. Sorry, sidekick, you'll be sleeping outside.
☆⌒(*^∇゜)v Ration & Water x8 Basic supplies needed to survive the harsh tutorial environment. Sharing with sidekicks is not recommended. Adam blinked. Then he rubbed his eyes and looked again, just to make sure he wasn't hallucinating.
"I've been meaning to ask… what's your deal?" he said flatly.
"Did I piss you off or something?" The system, unsurprisingly, offered no response, not even so much as an apology. Tutorial beginning! Good luck, Players! — — — Inside the tutorial control center, a man leaned back in his chair, his face twisted into a sour expression as he clenched his teeth.
"I'm so freaking jealous!" He looked perfectly average, maybe a little overweight, the kind of person you wouldn't glance at twice in a crowd. His eyes were glued to the screen in front of him, which displayed the latest Impossible difficulty tutorial. This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work. More specifically, it displayed her. Earth's main character. A supremely beautiful woman who could make even goddess-tier models look plain.
She stood out effortlessly, like the world itself had decided to favor her existence. Which it had, otherwise she wouldn't be labeled as a main character. Unfortunately, she came with baggage. The man's gaze shifted slightly, landing on Adam. Her boyfriend. The tagalong. His jealousy flared again. It was bad enough that she existed. Did she really need to have that guy clinging to her too? He exhaled sharply and leaned forward, fingers hovering over his controls. He couldn't help it.
Just a little bit of interference. Nothing major. Just messing with the system messages a little was all. Just enough to vent. Still, there were limits. He hadn't touched the starter equipment or rewards. That was strictly forbidden, and breaking that rule would cost him the cushy job he had worked so hard to get. Even so… His eyes flicked back to the screen, irritation simmering. He really wanted to. — — — Mei reached into the system panel and pulled out a sleek chrome handgun that resembled a Colt M1911.
The moment it settled into her palm, its appearance began to shift. A black Glock 19. A coyote tan Sig Sauer P320. A matte black Beretta M9. A polished silver Smith & Wesson 617. The transformations didn't stop there. The weapon continued cycling through designs, even taking on forms that didn't exist in reality. Some looked like they were ripped straight from video games, others clearly born from Mei's own imagination.
After a few more changes, she finally settled on a purple-and-blue hand cannon with gold star motifs. It carried the weight and presence of a Desert Eagle, but the design was entirely her own. Sleek, exaggerated, and just a little over-the-top. She paused, thinking, then added a red dot sight and an underbarrel laser.
"How's it look?" she asked, grinning.
"Dope, right?" Adam nodded without hesitation.
"I can't lie, that's sick." Mei gave the weapon a quick once-over, making sure everything felt right. Then she raised it and aimed at a nearby tree, one thick enough to rival a wash basin. The shift in her demeanor was immediate. The playful energy that always surrounded her faded, replaced by something sharp and precise. Her posture straightened, her gaze narrowed, and for a brief moment, she felt like a completely different person. Then she fired. A deafening crack split the air.
The recoil snapped through her arm as a streak of purple energy tore forward, slamming into the tree with overwhelming force. The trunk shuddered violently before snapping clean in half. It crashed into the forest, taking several smaller trees down with it in a chain of destruction. Adam stared, his mind struggling to process what he had just seen. That wasn't a pistol. It was a handheld cannon. A magical WMD. At this rate, he wouldn't be surprised if it could punch through a mountain.
"That… was awesome!" Mei shouted, her excitement nearly matching the echo of the shot.
"Nah, that was insane," Adam shot back.
"Are you serious? Even veteran Players shouldn't be able to do that!"
"You try!"
"…Try what?"
"Casting a spell, obviously!"
"I'd love to, but I don't know how."
"Didn't the system say you just have to use your imagination?"
"Yeah, but it also kept mocking me…" Mei waved him off.
"Just try!" Adam let out a slow breath.
"Fine…" He pulled out his wooden staff and closed his eyes, forcing himself to focus. Earlier, when they had questioned the system, one answer had completely thrown them off. Classes didn't come with pre-made skills. Instead, Players had to discover the execution methods themselves. Or, if they were capable, create entirely new ones from scratch. The concept was simple. In practice, it felt absurd. All they had to do was imagine it. Visualize their magic flowing through their body. Shape it. Give it form.
Turn it into something real. Easy. And yet, impossibly difficult. Adam took a steady breath and focused. He imagined his magic gathering, condensing into a cylindrical shape compressed with nuclear power, then firing outward like Mei's shot. A magic bullet. For a moment his magic refused to move, however something within him seemed to click into place and then all of his mana rushed to the tip of his staff. When he opened his eyes, a small purple orb hovered at the tip of his gnarled wooden staff.
It was barely the size of a quarter, flickering faintly. Not exactly intimidating. Still, he gave it a silent command and sent it forward, aiming at a tree similar to the one Mei had obliterated. There was no bang. No shockwave. Just a slow-moving, softly glowing ball of light drifting through the air. It took several long seconds to reach its target. Mei and Adam watched in silence, anticipation building despite themselves. The orb finally made contact. And then… nothing.
It dissipated into thin air without leaving so much as a scratch on the bark.
"Pftt!" Mei snorted, barely holding it in.
"Yeah… maybe stick to heals." Adam didn't even have the energy to argue. His legs gave out, and he collapsed to his knees. Not from embarrassment. From exhaustion. His entire body felt hollowed out, like something had drained him down to nothing. Inefficient magic power to complete spell [Purple Bullet of Mass Destruction] Magic power levels critical! Continued use of magic may result in death!
"Adam?!" Mei rushed to his side, her earlier teasing gone in an instant.
"Are you okay?"
"I… I'm fine…" he managed between strained breaths.
"Just… tired…" That single spell had completely emptied his E-rank mana reserves. If the system hadn't forcefully cut off the flow, he wouldn't just be tired right now. He'd be dead. An amazing achievement has been made within the tutorial! The system's chime rang out, bright and triumphant. A radiant screen materialized above their heads, spraying confetti in a way far more extravagant than anything they had seen before. It even outshone the moment Mei had awakened her main character-tier talents.
Both of them froze. A Player has created the first Legendary-grade spell across tens of thousands of tutorials! Congratulations, Player Adam Colt! Reward: Magic rank increased by 1 rank & 1000 coins! Magic E → D! For a moment, neither of them spoke. They simply stared at the glowing screen, blinking as if their eyes were malfunctioning. Adam slowly raised a hand and pointed at himself.
"... Me?" Mei didn't answer. Her mouth had fallen slightly open as she reread the message, like she was trying to find the hidden punchline. A Legendary spell. From that? From that? Broadcasting this achievement across all worlds connected to the Game! Adam's expression twitched.
"That's… a thing?" The system, as usual, offered no explanation. Mei was still staring at him, her earlier teasing completely gone. Now there was something else in her gaze. Confusion, disbelief… and a growing realization that things might not be as straightforward as she thought. The forest, however, didn't care about their confusion. From somewhere deeper within the trees, a low, guttural growl rumbled through the air. It was distant. But not far enough.
— — — Tutorial Administrator's Report To: Management Player Adam Colt, sidekick to Earth's Main Character, Mei Mori, has become the first individual in tutorial history to create a Legendary-grade spell. After reviewing the circumstances surrounding this incident, it is my professional opinion that the result was caused by the convergence of two extremely important factors.
The first was his observation of Player Mei Mori's absurdly successful attempt at creating a custom skill perfectly suited to her talents and fighting style. The skill she created, [Purple Bullet], was formed with an almost ideal amount of magical power. When combined with her hidden talents, class bonuses, and other ridiculous advantages, the resulting attack possessed destructive power that bordered on the Legendary rank despite technically falling short of it.
The problem arose because Adam Colt had absolutely no understanding of the underlying principles of magic, skill creation, class convergence, or, frankly, common sense. After witnessing the attack, he somehow reached the conclusion that [Purple Bullet] was comparable to a weapon of mass destruction. When creating his own spell, he subconsciously incorporated that belief into the spell's foundation, attempting to replicate what he thought he had witnessed. The second factor was even more infuriating.
His talent, which allows him to leech off Mei Mori's absurd luck, activated at the exact moment the spell was being formed. This produced an extreme surge of fortune that compensated for shortcomings that should have made the spell's creation impossible. Most notably, it allowed the spell to complete its formation despite Adam Colt lacking the magical statistics normally required to create, let alone cast, a Legendary-grade spell. In conclusion, the bastard is disgustingly blessed and stupidly lucky.
In conclusion, this event was almost certainly a one-time anomaly produced by a series of highly improbable coincidences. Under normal circumstances, the successful creation of a Legendary-grade spell by someone of his level should, and remains to be impossible. Signed: Tutorial Administrator
