Chương 19: Chapter 18: The First Measure

James stepped into the circular chamber and immediately understood why Workman's Appraisal had called it an initiation site. The room looked abandoned at first glance, but the damage followed patterns instead of random decay. Broken shelves had fallen away from specific sections of wall, the stone table remained positioned exactly between three carved channels in the floor, and every line eventually converged on the waist-high pedestal at the center.
The depression in the pedestal matched a carpenter's square almost perfectly. Several pale runic lines extended from the empty space toward an incomplete symbol carved into the front, and Workman's Appraisal filled in what James could not understand on his own. Julie moved around the chamber's edge while Kevin climbed onto the pedestal and inspected the empty slot. [Class Resonance detected.] [Initiation site identified.] [Rune Carpenter inheritance incomplete.] James crouched beside the pedestal.
Someone might once have removed whatever tool belonged in the depression, but the chamber felt less like a robbed ruin and more like a test waiting for the correct person to arrive. He focused on the unfinished rune. [Structural Foundation Rune Fragment] [An incomplete Rune Carpenter framework used to stabilize connected materials and distribute force through compatible joining points.] [Missing component prevents activation.] [Compatible focus required.] The word Foundation caught James's attention for an uncomfortable second. His thoughts immediately went to the sealed line on his Status, but nothing pulsed, changed, or acknowledged the similarity. Workman's Appraisal treated the rune as ordinary class knowledge, and whatever hid behind [REDACTED] remained completely silent.
"Different thing," James said as he rubbed his thumb across the edge of the depression. Julie looked toward him, and Kevin stopped examining one corner long enough to send curiosity through the bond.
"At least I fucking hope it is, because I already have enough mysterious bullshit in my life." James did not own a magical carpenter's square. He did, however, possess Iron Fox metal, Stonecrest Ravager plates, Razerilted Bear hide, Silver Thread, an actual iron chisel, and most of a career spent measuring things that became expensive problems when they were not square. The moment he started comparing materials against the depression, a blue notification appeared. [Class Initiation Quest generated.] [The First Measure] [Construct a functional focus compatible with the Structural Foundation Rune Fragment.] [The focus must be personally constructed.] [The focus must incorporate monster-derived material.] [The focus must be accurate.] [Reward determined by craftsmanship and material compatibility.] James read the quest and looked toward the fading daylight outside.
He had intended to return to Daniel's camp before dark, report what he found, and maybe eat something that had been cooked by another human being for once. Instead, his new class had apparently decided his first official job should begin immediately.
"This is fine," James said as he set the Warpstone Warhammer beside the pedestal and opened his pack. He placed a narrow Iron Fox plate on the stone table, then added two thinner pieces of Ravager armor and a coil of Kevin's old silk.
"It's a square. I have made more complicated things while listening to customers explain why they definitely measured their own house correctly." Kevin sent amusement through the bond. James pointed the iron chisel toward him before beginning.
"You ate an entire bear in one sitting, so your position on sensible decision-making is permanently compromised." Julie abruptly turned toward the entrance. Heat signatures moved beyond the shrine. Kevin felt them a heartbeat later. His body flattened against the pedestal, and fresh silk ran toward the chamber walls as multiple heavy vibrations traveled through the narrow passage outside. James slowly lowered the chisel.
"Of course," he said as he reclaimed the warhammer. Julie moved beside his boot, while Kevin climbed the wall and began mapping the approaching creatures through vibration.
"Apparently magical trade school includes live-fire testing." Measured Strike activated. Mana left James in a controlled pull, and pale lines appeared across the shrine entrance. The skill showed old fractures running through the black stone passage, including one support that carried far more of the overhead weight than James would have trusted in any building. If he broke that point at the correct moment, part of the corridor would collapse.
"Kevin, upper stones," James said as he pointed toward the weakness. Kevin immediately climbed toward the marked section and anchored several strands across loose blocks. James looked toward Julie next.
"Anything that gets through after the collapse is yours to help finish." A purple glow appeared around the bend. The first creature entered the passage. [Rune-Eaten Ravager — Level 9] [A Stonecrest Ravager corrupted through prolonged consumption of damaged runic material.] [Runic growths increase defense while destabilizing internal structure. Two more moved behind it. A fourth remained farther back, each step heavier than the others and strong enough to shake grit from the ceiling. James waited until the first Ravager entered the chamber and its companions moved directly beneath the weakened support. Then he swung. The Warpstone Warhammer struck the highlighted fracture. Stone broke. Kevin pulled every prepared strand at once. Part of the passage collapsed. Black blocks crashed onto the second and third Ravagers, burying one completely and trapping the other beneath enough stone to prevent it from immediately following. The lead creature spun toward the sound, exposing its side. Julie attacked. She slipped beneath the Ravager's armored body and buried her fangs into the softer tissue behind one foreleg. The creature twisted after her, but James stepped into the opening and drove the hammer into the same joint. Measured Strike flashed. The second blow broke the leg. The Ravager fell hard enough to crack one of its corrupted crystal growths against the floor. Purple light began building beneath the damaged section, and Workman's Appraisal immediately marked the fracture as unstable." Back!" James shouted as he hooked Julie around the middle with the hammer shaft and pulled her away. Kevin abandoned his position above the collapse and flattened himself against the ceiling. The crystal discharged. Purple energy tore across the floor in a short violent burst, carving a black line through the stone where Julie had been seconds earlier. James stared at the damage before looking toward the wounded Ravager." Good to know," he said as the creature tried to rise on three legs. Julie's irritation at being physically dragged from the fight pressed through their bond." You can be offended after we stop exploding." Kevin descended behind the creature. Silk wrapped around its jaws and remaining front leg, pulling the head sideways while Julie struck the exposed throat. James finished it with a controlled blow beneath the skull rather than touching the unstable crystal. [You and your bonded familiars have slain Rune-Eaten Ravager — Level 9.] [Experience awarded.] [Julie has leveled up.] [Julie is now Level 9.] [Kevin has leveled up.] [Kevin is now Level 9.] James barely had time to register the notifications. Stones shifted in the passage, and the partially trapped Ravager began forcing itself through the rubble. The creature underneath the main collapse remained pinned, but whatever waited behind them struck the blockage hard enough to move several hundred pounds of broken stone. Kevin spread silk through the damaged passage. His Level Nine body remained still while dozens of strands mapped each vibration. Julie crouched near James, excitement replacing the irritation from a moment earlier." You two are getting disturbingly close to enjoying this too much," James said as he raised the hammer. Another impact shook the room, and part of the collapse gave way." Actually, never mind. I know exactly where you got that from." The trapped Level Nine Ravager squeezed through first. James did not meet it head-on. He let Kevin bind one leg, then used Measured Strike to identify where the corrupted plates transferred force around the shoulder. Julie struck low and retreated, keeping its attention shifting between targets while James hit the highlighted joint. The first blow cracked armor. The second damaged the connection beneath it. James hooked the hammer behind the weakened plate and tore it outward. The Ravager screamed. Julie lunged through the exposed gap. Her venom entered deep. Kevin tightened the web. The creature fell. [Julie and Kevin have slain Rune-Eaten Ravager — Level 9.] [Experience awarded.] Blue light surrounded both familiars. [Julie has leveled up!] [Julie is now Level 10.] [Kevin has leveled up!] [Kevin is now Level 10.] Neither familiar had time to celebrate. Light erupted around them. [Bonded familiar milestone reached.] [Julie has reached the first evolution threshold.] [Kevin has reached the first evolution threshold.] [Evolution paths are determined by species, attributes, skills, behavior, environment, and bond development.] Three possible forms appeared around Julie. [Venomcoil Hunter] If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. [Focus: Speed, concealment, venom potency.] [Potential Skill: Venom Control.] [Ironblood Constrictor] [Focus: Strength, durability, restraint.] [Potential Skill: Crushing Coil.] [Embercrest Serpent — Uncommon] [Generated through repeated exposure to magical materials, fire-aspected energy, runes, and the bond of a Rune Carpenter.] [Focus: Intelligence, Willpower, magical adaptation.] [Potential Skill: Rune-Touched Scales.] James felt Julie's attention settle on the final option almost immediately. He did not select it for her. Instead, he crouched beside her and waited until the familiar bond filled with impressions of the Warp Totem, the Ember Core, glowing runes, and Julie herself standing beside him with red-gold light beneath her scales." This is your body," James said as he rested one hand against the ground rather than touching the floating options. Julie held his gaze, and her choice came through with complete certainty." Embercrest it is." [Julie has selected Embercrest Serpent.] [Evolution commencing.] Golden fire surrounded Julie without burning the floor. Her body lifted as the light hardened into a glowing shell, and a flash of fear touched the bond before James pushed reassurance back toward her. The fear eased but did not disappear completely, which reminded him that intelligence made the moment more frightening as well as more meaningful. Kevin's choices appeared while Julie's evolution continued. [Silverweave Trapper] [Focus: Thread strength, layered traps, battlefield control.] [Potential Skill: Layered Web Domain.] [Venomspike Ambusher] [Focus: Agility, concealment, decisive venom attacks.] [Potential Skill: Execution Sting.] [Foundation Weaver — Uncommon] [Generated through repeated crafting assistance, structural reinforcement, rune work, and the bond of a Rune Carpenter.] [Focus: Intelligence, Willpower, structural silk compatibility.] [Potential Skill: Living Reinforcement.] Kevin answered with memories instead of hesitation. James saw the repaired Warp Totem through the spider's perspective, the warhammer being bound together with silk, cracks stabilized before they failed, and an imagined structure where glowing threads carried runic patterns through every joint." Foundation Weaver," James said as Kevin tapped his front legs together. His certainty came through the bond before James finished speaking." Yeah. That one fits you too damn well." [Kevin has selected Foundation Weaver.] [Evolution commencing.] Silver light wrapped around Kevin and formed a second cocoon suspended above the dead Ravager. Threads spread outward before the shell fully hardened, attaching themselves to damaged sections of the shrine and stabilizing several loose stones around the chamber. James stared at the reinforced cracks for a second before an impact from the passage reminded him that evolution had chosen a remarkably inconvenient time. The final creature forced its head through the rubble. Black crystal covered most of its skull. Purple runes burned beneath the plates, and the corruption spread much deeper than it had through the smaller Ravagers. Workman's Appraisal immediately produced a warning. [Rune-Eaten Ravager — Level 10] [Rarity: Uncommon] [Advanced runic corruption has fused unstable material throughout the creature's body.] [Warning: Breaking external crystal may trigger violent runic discharge.] James stepped between it and the two cocoons." You are not getting near them," he said as the Ravager charged. There was nobody available to answer him, but the sentence helped focus his anger. He activated Workman's Appraisal and let the monster become a structure instead of an animal. [Bone.] [Muscle.] [Crystal.] [Runic channels.] [Load paths.] A corrupted connection beneath the chest distributed energy from the crystalline growths through the rest of the body. It looked less like anatomy to James than a support line carrying weight it had never been designed to hold. Measured Strike marked it. James moved. He avoided the first charge and drove the warhammer into a rear leg. The Ravager turned faster than expected and caught his breastplate with one claw, throwing him against the pedestal hard enough to drive the air from his lungs. Pain filled his ribs. James forced himself up. The creature charged the cocoons." No," James said as he stepped into its path. He hooked the hammer beneath the glowing chest connection and pulled with all the Strength his new class had given him. The line stretched but refused to tear. The Ravager raised one claw. James released the hook and rolled beneath it. A cracking sound came from behind him. Golden light split Julie's cocoon. Heat rolled through the chamber. Julie descended nearly seven feet long, her original green darkened beneath red markings that crossed her body in clean geometric lines. A hardened crest protected the top of her skull, while faint golden light moved beneath the scales whenever she flexed. [Julie has evolved.] [Forest Snake has become Embercrest Serpent.] [Skill acquired: Rune-Touched Scales.] Julie attacked immediately. The Ravager released a burst of purple energy from its chest. James shouted a warning, but Julie deliberately crossed the attack's path. The energy struck her shoulder. Her red-gold markings ignited. Most of the purple light vanished into her scales. Pain hit their bond, but so did something else. Stored power. James stared." Holy shit," he said as Julie turned toward him. The energy traveled through her markings and gathered around her fangs." Okay. That is fucking useful." Julie struck the exposed chest connection. Her bite released the stolen energy directly into the corrupted channel. Purple and gold light flashed through the Ravager's body. The creature staggered, and James caught the weakened connection with the warhammer hook again. This time, it tore free. Corrupted material spilled onto the floor. The Ravager's runes began failing. Kevin's cocoon opened. Silver threads dropped first. Then Kevin descended through them, now the size of a large serving platter with geometric blue patterns crossing his body. His legs had thickened, the old stinger remained beneath his abdomen, and every strand of fresh silk carried a faint blue light. [Kevin has evolved.] [Silver Thread Spider has become Foundation Weaver.] [Skill acquired: Living Reinforcement.] Kevin landed directly on the Warpstone Warhammer. Silk entered the cracked bindings around its head. Blue light spread through every weak connection. [Living Reinforcement applied.] [Target structure temporarily strengthened.] James felt the difference immediately. The hammer stopped vibrating, loose plates pulled firmly against one another, and even the damaged spatial rune became stable enough to stop threatening catastrophic failure." Kevin," James said as the Ravager struggled upright. The spider's satisfaction hit the bond immediately." You beautiful judgmental bastard." Kevin launched from the hammer. His new silk wrapped around the Ravager's legs and attached to the shrine floor, wall, and pedestal. Instead of each strand carrying strain independently, the entire network supported itself as one connected structure. The Ravager tried to charge. It moved one step. Then stopped. Julie struck the exposed chest. Kevin held the legs. James activated Measured Strike. A pale line appeared across the shoulder joint where bone remained separate from the unstable crystal. Kevin reinforced the warhammer as James swung. The blow landed exactly on the marked point. Bone shattered. Crystal remained intact. The Ravager collapsed. Julie wrapped around its neck, Kevin bound the jaws, and both familiars applied venom while James kept the hammer ready. The creature fought for several seconds before its remaining strength disappeared. [Julie and Kevin have slain Rune-Eaten Ravager — Level 10, Uncommon.] [Combat evolution successfully demonstrated.] [Bonded trio synergy increased.] James lowered the hammer and looked at them. Julie was enormous compared with the snake he had first spared in the forest. Kevin's silver-blue patterns pulsed while he examined the warhammer like a craftsman reviewing repairs he considered barely acceptable. Both had changed because of choices they made themselves." You two look fucking incredible," James said as Julie moved close and attempted to wrap around his torso. Her new length nearly knocked him sideways, forcing James to catch himself against the pedestal." Okay. You might officially be too big for the scarf routine." Julie ignored him and pressed her crested head beneath his chin. Warmth and affection filled their bond, immediately followed by hunger strong enough to make James laugh. Kevin climbed onto the warhammer and added another reinforcing thread to the damaged rune with quiet satisfaction. Once the chamber settled, James returned to the unfinished carpenter's square. The attack had shifted one of his prepared plates slightly out of alignment. Kevin pointed out the error through a vibration in his silk, while Julie's new scales provided enough light for James to inspect the carving from several angles. Together, they corrected it. James shaped the Iron Fox metal into the long leg of the square. Ravager plate formed the shorter section, and Kevin's silk joined both around a reinforced inner corner. James measured repeatedly before carving the final runic connections. The last mark completed the structure. Pale blue light traveled through the square. [The First Measure completed.] [Focus Accuracy: Exceptional.] [Monster-derived materials incorporated.] [Bonded familiar contribution detected.] [Reward increased.] A golden notification followed. [Class Inheritance acquired.] [Structural Foundation Rune learned.] [Structural Foundation Rune] [Stabilizes connected materials and distributes force through compatible joining points.] [This is Rune Carpenter craft knowledge.] The final clarification made James pause. Whether the System had added it because his class was Unique or because he had stared too hard at the word Foundation, he could not tell. Nothing changed on his Status, and [REDACTED] remained silent." That answers exactly one question and creates about twelve more," James said as the light withdrew into the finished carpenter's square. Kevin tapped the new tool, while Julie watched from beside the pedestal." Fine. Structural rune. We'll leave the other mystery alone until it decides to stop being an asshole." More gold appeared. [Minor Rune Carpenter inheritance claimed.] [Workman's Appraisal has gained improved alignment analysis.] [Measured Strike has gained synergy with personally constructed runic tools and structures.] [The first Class Inheritance in Tutorial #782-F has been claimed.] A trumpet sounded across the entire Tutorial. The shrine vibrated. Golden text expanded across James's vision. [Tutorial progression requirement discovered.] [The Central Territory is protected by four Regional Seals.] [Each Regional Seal is bound to a Regional Boss.] [Regional Boss Level: 15.] [Regional Bosses Remaining: 4/4.] [Central Territory Status: Sealed.] [Defeat all four Regional Bosses to unlock the Central Territory.] James read the announcement twice. Four Level Fifteen bosses stood between the survivors and the center. He secured the carpenter's square inside his pack and lifted the reinforced Warpstone Warhammer. Julie moved beside him instead of climbing onto his shoulders, because at seven feet long she had become considerably less portable. Kevin settled on the hammerhead and connected himself to the damaged bindings with several thin strands." We have five levels to gain and a lot of shit to improve," James said as he walked toward the ruined passage. Julie's red-gold markings brightened, while Kevin's blue patterns answered with a faint pulse." We test everything you two can do, repair this hammer properly, and build enough gear that a Level Fifteen boss feels like a difficult job instead of a suicide attempt." A roar rolled through the distant forest. The sound carried enough force to shake leaves from branches beyond the shrine. Kevin's silk transmitted the vibration through the ruined stone, carrying an impression of something enormous moving somewhere far outside the clearing. Julie raised her crested head, and excitement hit James through the bond hard enough that he knew exactly what she wanted." No," James said as he stepped over the dead Ravagers. Julie looked toward him with obvious disappointment, and Kevin's quieter reaction suggested he considered immediate violence a reasonable research method." We are absolutely not fighting the giant mystery bastard today." Julie continued staring toward the distant roar. James rested the warhammer against one shoulder." First," he said as the trio entered the forest, "we figure out what the hell you two have become."
