She remembered the monstrous wave that had risen from the once-calm river at the moment she had been most desperate. She remembered the sky-darkening wings and the all-devouring flames when she was about to be dragged into that demon's den. She couldn't let this Sword Hero go slaughtering the dragon. Both sides were her benefactors. That put her in a difficult spot. And in her view, with Dara Bengba's current strength, going to see the Black Dragon wouldn't even be enough to fill its teeth.
Dara Bengba saw that the girl had been silent for a long while and thought she had accepted it. He got up, ready to leave the tavern. He still had to set out and look for more Virtue Coins.
"Please take me with you..." His clothes were tugged from behind, and the girl's pleading voice came from over his shoulder.
"Take you with me!?" Dara Bengba turned around. Surprise flashed across his face, then he shook his head firmly.
"My journey is full of unknowns and danger. If I take you, you'll die."
"And most of the time, you're just a useless burden to me." Aya knew she was a burden. But she had no choice. She didn't want to see her two benefactors killing each other. Even if she could play just a tiny role between them, that would be good enough. This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. She gathered her courage, raised her head, and looked Dara Bengba straight in the eye.
"I'm not a burden. I can wash clothes. I can cook. At critical moments, you can even use me as bait, and besides..." Aya reached into her pocket and pulled out a leaf. Silently, she focused. The fire elements in the air immediately gathered toward the leaf and, in the end, burned it to ashes. This was a simple use of fire elements without knowing any magic skill. Being able to do that was already pretty good.
"As you can see, I should have the potential to become a mage. I think a mage should be able to help you on your journey!" At that, Dara Bengba was completely speechless. A mage who wasn't even a Mage Apprentice was claiming she could help him? Help him with what? Light the campfire before bed? In the end, though, Dara Bengba couldn't withstand Aya's relentless pestering and could only reluctantly bring her along.
"If you don't take me with you, I probably won't live much longer. The moment I walk out of this tavern, not only will the coins you gave me be stolen, but I'll also be dragged into an alley by those brutal mercenaries and subjected to all sorts of inhuman things." That was Aya's exact wording. And it became the final straw that broke Dara Bengba's resolve. Setting aside his hatred for monsters and for the rotten kingdom, he was, at heart, a very kind person. He was worthy of the title Sword Hero.
What Aya described was absolutely not something he wanted to see. So he decided to take Aya with him. Once she became a Mage Apprentice, or once they reached a safe big city, he would leave her behind and continue traveling alone. In the barren wasteland, Dara Bengba dealt with a few tails whose greed had clouded their judgment. His face was cold as he handled them, then he walked silently at the very front.
"Where are we going?" Aya asked.
"I don't know," Dara Bengba answered stiffly. Aya said, "What do you want to eat tonight? I'll make it." Dara Bengba said, "Anything."
"How can that be? Then let's have grilled fish. Do you like it spicy or sweet?" Aya asked again.
"Anything..."
"How can you say anything? What if I make it and you don't eat it? Wouldn't that be a waste? Waste is shameful!"
"Please, just shut up..." So annoying! Dara Bengba's mouth twitched. He clenched his fist, and his steps paused for a moment. Aya: "Wuwu... QAQ" ➤ Next: Surrounding and Killing the Worm King
