The starlight gate closed behind me, sealing my physical coordinates within an absolute, silent pocket of space. As I stood on the threshold of my first trial, the uncompiled time-veils of my planet's stasis-well seemed to fade, my mind drifting into a quiet, introspective stasis. For the first time in many cycles, I found myself thinking not of my gravity-slopes or core-rotations, but of him. Eren Kai.
Before he had arrived in Crystal City, my life within the House of Opal had been a beautifully polished, sheltered cage. I remembered the quiet, empty galleries of our palace, where my skin would refract the dim starlight in lonely pools of violet and blue. Because of my high family status and my time-affinity, I was surrounded by those who revered my mother or feared my lineage. I could always tell, through empathetic crystalline resonance, the general nature of their hidden thoughts.
I felt their quiet greed, their hollow terror, and their constant, hidden agendas every time they bowed their heads. They always wanted something from me — a favor from the House, a streamlined trade agreement, or a "conjoint deepening of relations". But Eren had been different. The moment he stepped through our veil, his presence had been blunt, raw, and completely wreathed in an absolute, unyielding honesty. He didn't bow his head, and he didn't care about my family's status or our great wealth.
He treated me as a peer, a friend, and he had stood in front of me in battle, ready to use his body as my shield without asking for a single thing in return. He had inspired me to try again, to push past my limits so I could stand beside him on the high basalt terraces as an equal Ascendant. I had noticed the change in him, though. Ever since his student had died, Eren's presence had grown colder. His mana cycled with a quiet, dangerous heat, and his bottomless eyes carried a deep, heavy sorrow.
He felt the loss of his people with a physical, painful intensity. To the other high-tier cultivators of the Deep, such grief was considered wasteful, even foolish; the weak and unascended were merely disposable variables to be discarded during the integration. But Eren didn't see them that way.
Despite being the prophesied "monster" destined to bring an end to all Law and destroy the Higher Courts, he still enjoyed the simple things — the taste of his cook's sweet bread, the sparks of a campfire, and the laughter of his friends. He was an Ascendant who snuggled his own Hydra. He found a way to surpass his origin without losing it. And that was why I was determined to succeed. As I stepped into my challenge gate, the silver-blue light wreathed my hardened body, throwing me into the Harmonic Crucible.
The trial was a chaotic, high-frequency time-dilation storm. The local space-time was fractured, trying to rip my gravity-channels from my core. I wove my time-channels into my gravity-conduits, my Restructured Crystalline body-reinforcement flaring with a brilliant gold-pink light. Every second, the time-streams tried to force my structured cells to de-cohere, but I focused on my enhanced Crystalline Vibration technique, vibrating my cells at the exact pitch of the local stasis to maintain my physical coordinates.
I wouldn't let my coordinates dissolve in this chamber. I was going to break through my bottleneck, Ascend to the Ninth Tier, and make sure I was strong enough to stand beside my loved ones when the sky finally broke. The transition into my own Challenge Chamber was a flat, absolute erasure of my spatial senses. I landed on a solid basalt platform wreathed in the starless black-and-crimson void-rift, my boots producing a silent, heavy thud.
The presence of the system wreathed my vision in a series of glowing, violet-light notifications that carried that same, cold and personal tone. I reminded myself to help Kasian find out why the Systems can act and feel different even with the same signatures. [Welcome to your Sandbox, Eren Kai.] [Conceptual Challenge: Absolute Control.] [Failure Condition: Deconstruction of the soul-gate.] [Warning: The editor must first learn the limits of his own ink.] [Note: Challenge Dungeon exists outside of the Standard System Time.] Before I could analyze the parameters, the basalt platform beneath my boots dissolved, and I was dragged into a violent nightmare. The pull was absolute. My star-cores stalled, my [Symphony of the Animus Arch] screamed with a sudden, chaotic static, and my physical body was pulled into a vivid, horrifying vision. The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
I was standing in the center of Bastion's central plaza, but the city was a ruined, ash-covered wasteland. My black-red Voidflame was completely out of control, a colossal, planet-scale storm of liquid deletion-fire that was systematically un-writing the very basalt foundations of my world. I watched in a paralyzed, cold horror as the flame crawled up the spires, consuming the defences, the Academy training grounds, and the residential districts.
"Eren!" Anna's voice screamed, her silver traveling robes caught in the wind-shear of my Domain.
"Help us!" Lucas, Rexxar, Jeeves, my students... they were all there, trapped in the center of my entropic field. I tried to reach for them, tried to use my [Syntropy] to rewind the damage and snap their coordinates back to wholeness. But my hand was shaking. I had zero control over my mana. My [Mana Authority] through my [Omnipresence] refused to obey my voice. Every time I tried to command the gravity to lessen, the pressure multiplied.
Every time I tried to snuff out the Voidflame, the black-red liquid fire flared with an even more violent, uncooled wrath. I watched, wreathed in my own absolute helplessness, as my own un-aligned power systematically consumed my family, turning their soul-gates to dry glass before my eyes.
"You seek power too quickly, Prince," a cold voice whispered in my mind.
"You carry the mass of a progenitor, but your hand is too light. If you do not learn to govern your own density... your wrath will destroy your world. This is the only path forward." The vision was a lie. I knew, with the cold clarity of my Ninth Tier perception, that it was a simulation inside my soul gate. But knowing it didn't make the weight any lighter. This was my deepest, most silent fear: the absolute loss of control.
I had spent my life trying to be as cautious as I could realistically be, calculating every variable and planning every contingency to ensure my family's safety. The thought of my own power becoming an unyielding, chaotic storm that would consume the very people I was trying to protect was a terminal, soul-crushing weight. The simulation stripped me of my Domain. It shut down my [Voidflame], my [Lattice Perception], and my secondary batteries, leaving me wreathed in nothing but my own physical frame.
And then, the environmental trials of the chamber descended. The basalt cavern was subjected to a non-Euclidean tempest of crushing gravitational-shears and massive, physical basalt rocks that rained from the ceiling at terminal velocity. Without mana, without my gravity-slopes, and without my [Anchor of the Unmovable], my physical body was the only shield I had left. The struggle was visceral, a brutal test of my physical limits.
The first basalt rock hit my shoulder with the force of a mountain-side collapse, the kinetic impact producing a loud, bone-shattering crack that splintered my left collarbone. The gravity-shears weren't just hitting my skin; they were trying to pull my star-cores directly out of my chest cavity. The unaligned pressure was so massive it caused my lungs to collapse, the unrefined Void-essence in the air choking my airways.
My internal blood-currents — wreathed in my Voidflame — began to stagnate as my muscle fibers tore under the pressure. I was forced to use my own hands to physically manipulate and realign my bones, pushing my splintered ribs back into my sternum while under a fifty-ton crushing force. I sat cross-legged in the center of the storm, completely ignoring the pain. If the System's sandbox wanted to strip my mana, I would simply have to rely on my projected physical density of un-aligned flesh.
I remembered the lessons I had worked on with Leoric in the central foundries — the structural, molecular alignment of metals and slate. I wove my body-reinforcement and my mental fortress skills — [Aegis of the Lightless] and my unyielding physical density — into a single, unified technique. I had Ascended, therefore my body was purely a figment of my perception of who I was.
I didn't use mana to heal the bones; I used my own raw, physical will to contract my muscle fibers and realign the splintered basalt-steel of my skeleton, physically forcing my body to maintain its structure through sheer willpower. It was a grueling, agonizingly slow process of physical attrition. I spent what felt like a grueling decade of subjective time inside the stasis-loop, completely locked in that absolute, painful struggle.
Day after day, year after year, the basalt rocks and gravity-shears hammered my physical frame. My collarbones were shattered and re-knit, my ribs cracked and physically forced back into place, and my skin was torn by the kinetic friction of the space-tears. Every single second was a test of survival, my mind caught in an endless, quiet grind of pain and physical alignment. But with every cycle, the [Primordial Shell] grew denser.
My muscle fibers compacted, my bone density multiplied, and my physical stasis became so absolute that the basalt rocks began to shatter upon my shoulders like glass against an anvil. With nothing but my own manipulation and Perception to keep me entertained, I had finally mastered the projections of a physical weight of my body. With a sudden, silent shift of the Lattice, the non-Euclidean storm died.
The purple nebula sky of the volcanic canyon returned, and the violet system prompts appeared in my vision with a quiet, respectful light. [Challenge completed. Awaiting local coordinate-evolution rewards.] I stood up, my boots producing a silent, heavy thud on the dark basalt platform of the real world. My body felt different — incredibly dense, solid, and wreathed in a physical authority that didn't require an ounce of mana to maintain.
I had survived, and my control over my sense of self had grown tremendously for it. I looked around the platform, but Crys' wasn't anywhere around. After I sent a probing scan with my Perception I realized that she hadn't returned yet. Her challenge was designed specifically to help her gravity-time channels break through her bottleneck, and it would likely require its own subjective eons of trial.
I sat down on the dark basalt of the platform, crossed my legs, and closed my eyes, entering a deep, quiet state of meditation to rest and consolidate my physical gains while I waited for Crys to return from the dark.
