The air above the central spire rippled, as if surrendering to a new Authority. It was the feeling of a heavy indigo shadow casting its weight across the cavern, a presence so absolute that it made the very basalt floor groan as if it were holding up the sky itself. I watched as the last traces of the lavender Aegis aurora were bled out of existence, replaced by a deep, airless void. Then, a being descended. He did not use wings of starlight or flares of light-speed transition.
He simply lowered himself into our reality like a slow-moving tectonic plate, displacing so much Essence that the few surviving Veresian soldiers at the far end of the cavern were driven to their knees, some even passing out from the sudden change in pressure. He landed fifty yards away, his boots silent against the grey stone. He wore robes woven from a dark silk that moved like a disturbed oily lake, and he held a staff carved from the ivory humerus of some forgotten galactic titan.
Through the [Void-Lattice Perception], his signature was monolithic, holding more power than all of the three Ascendants I consumed. He was a Peak Tier 9, likely knocking on the door of Tier 10, possessing an Authority that was currently making my newly acquired [Abyssal Stillness] ward shriek with warning signals. He didn't look at us immediately. He looked at the smoldering ash where Pharia had been consumed. He walked to the crushed remnants of Xylex and finally the dissipated amethyst mist that was once Orobus.
"Flame and Void," the entity finally spoke. His voice didn't carry sound; it was like the resonance of two tectonic plates rubbing together deep underground.
"To see three High Guardians turned to fuel is... a statistical anomaly. Even for one holding Primordial Essence." I reached deep into my internal resources, trying and failing to force another [Glimpse of a Path]. I felt a small prickle of genuine anxiety. I was operating blind. For the first time in a very long time, I was stepping into a combat zone against a superior foe without having scouted a single branch of the future.
The sheer adrenaline and the residue of Wrath still thick in the air, however, transmuted that anxiety into a high-octane battle-mania. I was elated. I was terrified. And I was, for some reason I couldn't logically justify, completely ecstatic. Alecton staggered toward me, his weapons leaving a trail of blood in the dust. He looked horrific. Most of his mantle was incinerated, and his obsidian skin was a cracked map of raw energy leaks. Yet, his white eyes were glowing with a ferocious joy.
"Only one more," Alecton wheezed, the smell of burnt spirit coming off him in waves.
"One head left to take... and then my people can finally have peace." The Lord of Aegis, finally looked at us. He tilted his head with an inquisitive elegance.
"I am Xaris, the Architect of your salvation," he stated calmly.
"Join me. A Soul that can endure the integration of a Primordial star and the nothingness of the Void... you are wasted with these uncivilized hounds. Step onto the Horizon as a commander, and you shall have riches that make dragons weep with envy."
"I think I'm more of a dog person," I replied, a jagged grin pulling at my blood-smeared mouth. I didn't wait for his rebuttal. I didn't need a vision to tell me the first move was to scout him out with some aggression. I launched, the [Titan's Bone-Density] making my jump shatter the floor into a twenty-foot crater. I utilized [Void Emperor's Omnipresence], bypassing the fifty yards and manifesting in the air directly behind Xaris. I swung the obsidian blades, wreathed in my Domain's white-gold entropy.
"Wrong choice," Xaris murmured. He didn't move. He simply shifted the density of the air behind him. My blades slammed into a wall of solid air that was a hundred times harder than diamond. The kinetic feedback vibrated through my forearms, and for a split second, I was staggered. He tapped his staff on the floor.
"Decree: Mirror Stasis." Reality snapped. The world around us shattered like a massive pane of glass, and one microsecond later, the environment had been completely replaced. I was no longer in the basalt basement of the siphon station. I stood on a surface of silver glass that stretched endlessly in all directions under a platinum-grey sky. Colossal glaciers, some the size of cities, floated upside down in the atmosphere, casting long, sharp shadows across the mercury oceans far below the transparent floor.
It was his Inner World. Fear started to rise before I instantly clamped it down and grounded myself. I naively assumed that he would be limited like the other Ascendants.
"Let me teach you a few things about real power. Within this space, my word is fact," Xaris' voice echoed from every glacier simultaneously.
"You have no stars to draw from here, little savage. Only the silence of the frost." He raised a hand, and the floor beneath my boots lunged upward. Before I could activate [Omnipresence], four massive, diamond-silver pillars erupted around my limbs, slamming together into an airtight, conceptually enforced coffin of absolute zero stasis. I was pinned. I roared, flaring my Flame, but the Ice of a Peak Tier 9's Inner World was a conceptual challenge my Domain couldn't immediately override.
I felt the cold leaching the very intention from my Spirit. My fingers turned to brittle glass and snapped off within my gauntlets. My ears crumbled. [Syntropy] engaged in a frantic, stuttering loop, constantly trying to repair tissue that was being deleted by the "Fact" of Xaris' environment.
"Look at you," Xaris' physical form manifested in front of my prison, his expression one of detached disappointment.
"The wrath in the air has blinded you. You clearly are not one of them, yet you fought like a common brawler because of the ring's pressure." He was right. A cold clarity washed over me through the psionic haze of [Abyssal Stillness]. The atmospheric Wrath of the Veresian world had compromised my clinical detachment. I had charged into a specialized terrain disadvantage because the fire in my blood wanted friction more than it wanted victory.
"End of the line," Xaris said, raising his Titan-staff to finish the execution. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. A voice, ragged and dying, boomed through the material wall of the world. It sounded like it was coming from an impossible distance, a heartbeat from the grave.
"FLAME BROTHER!" Back in the material cavern, I sensed Alecton through the lattice link we still shared. He saw my signature vanishing behind the mirror-prison Xaris had constructed in reality. Alecton funneled every remaining molecule of his life-force, his centuries of memory, and his uncooled rage into the charcoal ring on his finger. He became a literal pillar of sentient Vengeance, an eruption of pure conceptual [Wrath] that burned brighter than the central spire of the planet.
He launched himself into the frost wall holding me in the physical plane. The feedback through the Inner World was spectacular. Xaris' silver glaciers shuddered. A hairline crack — no wider than a sewing needle — webbed across the front of my ice-coffin. It was a minuscule opening, a pin-hole of vulnerability in a Tier 9 Mythic authority. It was all I needed. Alecton's life signature flickered once and then flatlined into absolute zero. He was gone. My heart didn't break; it went dead cold.
The reckless mania of Wrath evaporated, replaced by a dark, clinical dissection that would have frightened Syntheia herself.
"Thank you, Alecton. It's my turn now," I whispered. Using [Omnipresence], I didn't just reach through the crack for the ambient mana. I commanded the Ring of Wrath — currently rolling on the basalt floor of the material world — to cease its physical existence and relocate into my internal continent. The Ring hit my obsidian sands and shrieked. It was an apex Curse, and finding itself inside a Void-star's belly, it tried to consume me from the inside out to take control of my Domain.
It bit into my internal mana-conduits like an enraged beast. Obey, I commanded. My internal voice resonated with the [Symphony of the Animus Arch]. The Ring fought back, flooding my vision with visions of burning empires and mountains of corpses. It was a level of Wrath that could turn a sun to soot. I am the Void that swallows the stars, I told it, flaring the central Core and activating [The Void-Star's Hunger] within my own soul. I am the Flame that governs the End. You are an ingredient, not the chef.
Submit, or I will hand you to Gluttony and watch it turn your history into waste. Gluttony, in its bracelet manifestation, responded with a rhythmic, high-frequency metal shriek. It sensed a kindred conceptual essence and wanted to feast. Faced with absolute, lightless erasure, the Ring of Wrath finally yielded. Its aggressive heat didn't vanish; it merged. It recognized the Flame of Ending within me as its natural superior. Synchronization finalized.
Hunger, Anger, and Annihilation joined their voices in a singular, terrifying harmony. I expanded my presence through the needle-hole Alecton had bought for me.
"Shatter," I dictated. The Ice Prison instantly unraveled into basic atoms. I stepped out of the ruins of Xaris' Authority. I wasn't wreathed in the white-gold light of Rebirth or the Purple and Grey Flame of ending anymore. The flame trailing from my shoulders was a viscous, light-drinking pitch black, shot through with veins of violent, pulsing crimson fire that moved like arterial blood through a shadow. [Evolution Recorded.] [Composite Skill Synchronized: Voidflame (Origin).]"Impossible," Xaris stammered, raising his staff. His mirror-eyes were cracking with his inner world's instability.
"That fire... what are you doing? Silver Decree: Absolute Cold! Return to zero!" He unleashed his final, world-scale contingency. The entire platinum sky above lunged downward in a wave of conceptual stasis meant to freeze time and matter permanently. It should have turned the entire planet into a tomb. I didn't block it or try to avoid it. I simply walked forward, and the black-red liquid of my fire dripped from my fingertips to meet his attack. Xaris laughed, his voice tinged with hysteria.
"A single spark against a world? You are nothing—" The laugh was severed. The moment the Voidflame touched the wave of silver decree, it didn't just burn. It inhaled deeply and consumed, treating his ice like a massive banquet. The Gluttony integrated into the Flame began a feast. For every mile of ice that attempted to freeze me, the black-red fire expanded two miles, growing fatter, denser, and more predatory as it converted Xaris' Tier 9 mana directly into its own combustion. Xaris screamed in terror.
He threw dozens of mirrors, dozens of golems, dozens of light-based spells. Each one served only to make the Voidflame bloom higher into the silver sky. It was an all-consuming ending. Everything it touched lost the systemic permission to remain stable.
"I am a Master of Records!" Xaris shrieked as I manifested directly in front of him.
"Then let's clear the archives," I said. I reached out and placed my hand on his silver chest plate and allowed the Voidflame to enter his Core. I closed my eyes and poured every drop of Essence I had gathered from the dead Ascendants and the over-saturated reserves of my [Void-Star] into the terminal spark. The detonation was completely silent. A sphere of black-red nothingness expanded out from my position. It ate the silver oceans. It swallowed the glaciers.
It breached the walls of Xaris' Inner World and erupted back into the physical cavern of Aegis, rapidly growing the more it consumed. The massive industrial siphons were the first to go. The organic mana-veins ceased to exist as the fire traced their Essence lines through the portals and across the planet. When I finally pulled the Voidflame back into my ribs, forty-two percent of the planet's northern hemisphere was a smoldering, cauterized crater that reached halfway into the mantle.
The Harmony Protocol had not just broken; its entire history had been burned off the page. Silence reclaimed the ruin. The platinum world was gone. The lavender world was gone. I was standing in a wasteland of molten basalt and cold, ash-covered glass. Around the edges of the portal, a few hundred Veresian survivors — who I made sure to protect from the flame — were standing amongst the rubble, looking at me. They weren't cheering. There were no shouts of joy.
They stared at the Ring of Wrath on my finger and the black-red smoke still venting from my skin. They had been freed from their masters, only to realize that they had summoned a hurricane to deal with a rainstorm. I looked at the charred basalt where I last saw Alecton. There was nothing. Not even ash. He had used his soul as the fuel for my strike, and he had burned away.
"Rest well, brother," I whispered. [Instance Completed.] [Objective Success: Planetary Hierarchy Deleted.] [Nodal Stability: TERMINATED.] [Rewards Calculating... Synchronization Pending.] The blue portal of the Prime System bloomed in the center of the molten crater. I turned away from the terrified crowd, the cold weight of the Ring sitting next to Gluttony on my hand. I walked toward the exit, my tattered armor trailing behind me like a broken shroud.
I had won the challenge, and I had claimed a power that could burn empires. But as the transition light engulfed my vision, all I could taste was the copper and sulfur of a friend who had paid everything just so I could hold a match. Paradise was a lie, and the Truth was just a much larger furnace. I stepped into the light. Ferra was waiting, and I had an entire world's worth of debt to collect.
