The steel door sealed behind them with a deep metallic thud, like a coffin lid snapping shut. The chamber beyond was wide, circular, and impossibly still. Not peaceful. Waiting. The floor was made of dark metal carved with pale energy grooves that spread from the center in geometric patterns, every line converging on a solitary stone pedestal beneath a slow green light that made the chamber resemble a ritual site disguised as military engineering.
On that pedestal rested two pale-blue crystal keys, quiet and beautiful beneath the green light. They looked like eyes watching every breath drawn inside the room. Ten swallowed hard. Lumina pressed flat against Z-69's shoulder, ears rigid despite her exhaustion. Z-69 did not look at the keys first. He looked up instead. A massive electronic sphere hung embedded in the ceiling.
It rotated in slow silence beneath layers of glass plates, sensor rings, and dark mechanical seams, while the mechanical iris at its center opened and closed with the soft precision of an eye that had spent the entire Gauntlet learning how each survivor responded to fear. The Core Eye. It watched him—not the room or the keys. Him. Z-69 could feel it clearly now. The Gauntlet's attention had narrowed.
The dead tunnel behind them, the laser maze, the drone corridor, every trap and murder-system they had crossed, all of it had been leading to this chamber, this moment, this evaluation. Ten's voice came thin beside him.
"It's too quiet." Z-69 exhaled once.
"There are people here." Ten stiffened.
"Where?" The opposite door slammed open. Four contestants stormed in, organized, prepared, and dangerous. Not desperate stragglers or panicked survivors. A team. Three frontliners moved first, each wearing light armor over a flexible combat suit, with energy guns hanging low at their sides, mechanical gauntlets covering their forearms, and plasma knives glowing faintly at their hips in the practiced arrangement of people who had entered expecting coordinated combat.
Behind them stood a young hacker with a digital control board strapped to his forearm. His fingers were already moving, fast, calm, and far too confident for someone entering a final chamber. The tallest wore a Brute Gear exosuit, a skeletal frame of black iron wrapped around his body with hydraulic pistons lining his limbs and reinforced shoulder plates doubling his width, so that every step struck the floor with the weight and certainty of an industrial press. He spotted Z-69 and snorted.
"So it's you." His gaze swept over the dead man, the half-dead kid, and the fox barely keeping her eyes open. His contempt was open enough to be boring.
"These keys belong to us." Lumina bared her teeth. Ten stepped half a pace behind Z-69. Z-69 remained calm.
"Two keys," he said.
"One for us. One for you. No need to fight." For one heartbeat, the room held still. Then the enemy team burst into laughter. The knife wielder raised his glowing blade and pointed it at Z-69 like a prize already claimed.
"No fight means no glory," he said.
"Break you here, and my face ends up on posters." The hacker smirked without looking up from his board.
"You really don't get it. This Gauntlet has hidden features." The Core Eye shifted from blue to yellow, then red. A digital display blazed across the far wall. CORE CHAMBER TWO KEYS FINAL TEST OF ROUND TWO CORE EYE REGISTERS COMBAT BEHAVIOR NO EXIT WITHOUT DEATH RESOLVE IT YOURSELVES The floor trembled as thin veins of energy ignited beneath the metal and spread from the pedestal through the chamber in branching geometric lines. Ten's face drained of color.
"They're getting buffed!" Z-69's gaze locked onto the hacker.
"They are interfacing with the system." Lumina hissed. Cheaters. They are exploiting the algorithm. The Brute threw his head back and laughed.
"Told you." His smile vanished.
"The keys are ours." The pistons in his exosuit screamed awake.
"You came here to die." Z-69 answered quietly.
"You may try." The room exploded into motion. The Brute moved first, obscenely fast for something heavy enough to crush a car. The exosuit launched him forward in a straight line with one iron fist cocked back, and the punch tore the air open behind it, dragging a pressure wave through the chamber strong enough to shake dust from the ceiling panels before the blow even reached Z-69. Z-69 raised the Heaven-Sundering Short Blade and blocked. Steel met reinforced iron.
The impact rang like a temple bell struck by a falling engine. Z-69 slid backward several meters, boots screaming across the floor, leaving twin gouges in the metal. Ten shouted instantly.
"Left! Second punch coming!" Z-69 moved. The Brute's follow-up detonated through empty air and buried itself in the wall, where reinforced plating burst outward in a shower of metal fragments that forced Ten to cover his face and Lumina to flatten herself against Z-69's shoulder. The knife wielder flanked from the side, fast and too smooth under the Core Eye's assistance. His red plasma blade left a molten scar in the floor as he cut low. His real target was not Z-69. It was Ten.
Lumina's voice slammed into Z-69's mind. This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings. KICK HIM! Z-69 twisted, parried the slash, and drove a sharp kick into the attacker's knee. The man staggered. Z-69 channeled a small surge of violet current through the short blade on contact, not enough to lose control, but enough.
The enemy's plasma knife trembled violently as the feedback ran through the weapon and snapped his wrist backward, nearly dislocating the joint before the Core Eye's assistance could compensate. Then the rail gunner fired. Magnetic rounds screamed across the chamber. One hit would punch through Ten. One hit would erase Lumina. Lumina forced herself upright despite the exhaustion dragging at her limbs. A psychic wave burst from her crystal.
The first round curved by a fraction and screamed past Ten's ear instead of through his skull. A second followed, then a third. Lumina bent each shot just enough, and every correction made her small body shake harder. I cannot… hold this… much longer… The hacker never stopped typing. Every command pulsed into the Core Eye, and every pulse adjusted the chamber.
+20% MOVEMENT SPEED — BRUTE GEAR REACTION ASSIST ENABLED PLASMA ANGLE PREDICTION ACTIVE RAILGUN AUTO-AIM SUPPORT ENABLED The Brute laughed as his exosuit moved faster. The knife wielder recovered too quickly. The railgunner's barrel corrected itself toward Lumina with machine precision. Ten's hands trembled with helpless fury.
"He's using the system against us!"
"I know." Z-69 blocked another hammering strike from the Brute. This one drove him down to one knee for half a breath. The warning band on his wrist flickered orange. Then red. The Brute grinned wider.
"There it is. Even monsters have limits." Z-69 rose slowly. His eyes remained green, cold, and focused as he stepped into the storm instead of away from it. A hidden wall hatch burst open beside Lumina. A mini-drone launched from inside, throwing an electrified net straight at her. Z-69 was too far, and Lumina was too tired. But Ten moved without thought or plan, only instinct. He grabbed Lumina and yanked her backward.
The crackling net slammed into the floor where Lumina had been standing and spread violent arcs through the metal, close enough that the discharge lifted the fur along her tail even after Ten dragged her clear. Ten gasped, eyes wide.
"I felt it." He stared at the hatch.
"The floor changed. Heat built under it. I knew it was going to open." Z-69 glanced at him for a fraction of a second. No praise or wasted words. Just acknowledgment. For Ten, that was enough. His heart slammed once against his ribs. Then the Brute's fist crashed into Z-69's chest. The monstrous, tank-breaking blow threw Z-69 backward hard enough to shake the chamber.
He stabbed the Heaven-Sundering Short Blade into the floor to stop himself from tumbling, and violet sparks burst from the edge while the weapon carved a long scar through the metal and forced his body to halt against momentum that should have carried him into the far wall. Cracks spread across Z-69's torso. Black-purple lines crawled beneath his skin. The warning band on his wrist screamed red. His body was reaching its limit, and he felt it clearly. Damage stacked too quickly. Energy drained too fast.
Regeneration fought to keep up. And beneath all of it— The Hunger stirred. Not whispering this time. Rising. It pressed against the inside of his skull like claws pushing through a sealed door. Let me out! The battle would end quickly if he did. The Brute would break. The railgunner would die. The knife wielder would become meat. The hacker would stop typing forever. And after that? Ten. Lumina. Anyone still breathing. Z-69 forced his breathing down. Forced the energy back. Forced the monster inside him to kneel.
His whole body trembled from the strain.
"I must maintain control," he whispered.
"I cannot lose myself here." Then he raised his gaze to the Brute.
"To fight you," Z-69 said, voice low and unwavering, "I alone am enough." The room went still, not completely, but enough. The Brute hesitated. The knife wielder faltered. Even the hacker's fingers paused above the board. Because what had just happened was not subtle. Z-69 had suppressed something that wanted out. Ten saw it too. Not coldness or monstrosity. Effort. Terrible, painful effort, the struggle of someone clawing to keep hold of his own humanity with bleeding hands. Ten clenched his fists.
Something clicked, not in Ten's head, but deeper. A pattern. A weak point. The hacker stood beside one of the chamber's energy conduits. Every time he typed, the grooves beneath his boots changed color and pulsed in sync with the Core Eye. He was not merely issuing commands. He was linked. Meaning if that connection broke— "He loses control of the system," Ten realized. Fear tried to stop Ten, but he moved before it could. He ran. Lumina's voice cracked through the room. TEN, DON'T YOU DARE! But Ten did not stop.
He sprinted straight toward the hacker. The knife wielder noticed instantly and peeled off toward him, plasma blade rising. The knife wielder was too fast and too close. Ten saw the red edge coming for his throat. He knew he would not make it. Then violet lightning crossed the space between them. Z-69 abandoned the Brute and blasted forward like a thunderbolt. The knife was inches from Ten's neck when Z-69 arrived. But he did not cut the knife fighter first.
He slapped the hacker with one clean, perfectly placed hit, not lethal and not gentle. The hacker flew sideways and struck the floor unconscious before the control board left his hand, the impact ending his connection so abruptly that the Core Eye seemed to blink in confusion. The Core Eye glitched instantly. Red became yellow, yellow became blue, and the entire chamber stuttered. All buffs vanished. The Brute slowed. The knife wielder lost the unnatural edge in his footwork. The railgunner's aim drifted.
The battle flipped. Ten clutched his chest, panting hard. A shaky smile broke through his terror.
"Y-you saved me again." He swallowed.
"Third time." Z-69 glanced at him.
"Do not stand near energy conduits." Ten lowered his head, embarrassed despite everything.
"… I know." Without the buffs, the enemy team stopped being terrifying and became merely dangerous. Against Z-69, that was not enough. The Brute swung again. Z-69 slipped beneath it and slashed the exosuit's arm joint. The reinforced elbow split open in a scream of metal and sparks. The giant roared as one side of the frame failed and the exosuit redistributed its weight too slowly, forcing him to fight both Z-69 and the mechanical skeleton that had stopped obeying him.
The railgunner, stripped of Core Eye support, fired a desperate barrage. Lumina forced herself upright on Ten's shoulder and sent a psychic pulse into the shooter's vision. The woman flinched hard, and her shots carved useless trenches into the wall. The knife wielder lunged one last time. Ten reacted before fear returned. He grabbed Lumina with both hands and hurled her straight at the man's face.
"GO!" Lumina slammed into him with a furious screech. MEOW—NO, GRRRRR! The knife fighter flailed backward blindly. It was ridiculous. It worked. Z-69 arrived and brought the short blade down in a clean, controlled arc. The man's arm guard shattered. The shock knocked him unconscious before he hit the ground. The Brute lasted the longest. Rage kept him standing after the system stopped helping him.
He forced the damaged exosuit forward through sheer weight and stubbornness, hydraulic pistons screaming, half the frame leaking sparks. Z-69 stepped in close. One slash broke the shoulder piston. One thrust pierced the chest linkage. One kick destroyed the failing knee. The exosuit locked. The giant's eyes widened. Then he collapsed with a crash that shook the Core Room. Silence followed. Real silence. A second later, the Core Eye spoke.
"Opponent team: KO." Static.
"Criteria complete." The circular chamber stilled. The energy grooves beneath the floor dimmed. The enemy team lay scattered across the glowing metal, alive, unconscious, and defeated. Z-69 exhaled once. Ten sagged with exhaustion. Z-69 caught him before he fell. Lumina crawled weakly back onto Z-69's shoulder and stayed there without speaking. Together, they walked to the pedestal. The two crystal keys glowed quietly on the stone, serene and beautiful enough to hide how many people had died trying to reach them.
Z-69 picked up one. Purple lightning from his hand bled into the blue glow and twisted both colors together until the key looked like a fragment of thunder trapped beneath deep ocean water, beautiful enough to disguise the violence required to earn it. Ten stared at the second key. Then at Z-69. Then back at the key.
"I… get to take this one?"
"Yes." Z-69 lifted the second key and placed it in Ten's hands.
"You sensed traps. You guided me through the maze. You protected Lumina. You reached this point." Ten's cheeks flushed pink instantly. He lowered his head fast, failing to hide the proud, relieved smile breaking across his face. Lumina groaned and slumped against Z-69's neck. I am tired. But I still want to keep going… Z-69 turned toward the exit. The door ahead began to open.
Beyond it waited a larger, brighter, louder space filled with the sound of crowds, speakers, metal, and a grand combat arena breathing through the walls. Then a loudspeaker boomed overhead.
"Contestant 69." Static crackled.
"Contestant Ten." A pause.
"You have qualified for Round Three." The Core Eye rotated once.
"THE ARENA." Another crackle.
"DUEL MATCH." Z-69 spun the Heaven-Sundering Short Blade once in his hand. Violet light flickered across both keys. He stepped forward.
"Let's go." Behind them, the Core Room door slammed shut.
