He went back on a Wednesday. He stood in front of the lock and this time he thought about the young man on the second floor and not the decision, but after it, the long years of after it, the things he had become and done and told himself were inevitable. He thought about what he had sealed here and why a version of him that had already decided the world didn't deserve his softness would have felt the need to lock something away. You locked things away because they mattered.
You locked things away because you were afraid of what you'd do if you had access to them. He opened the lock. The floor on the other side was not ruined. It was not collapsed or cracked or even worn. It was exactly as he had built it, every stone, every angle, every deliberate wrongness of geometry precisely preserved. It was the best floor he had ever made. He knew this immediately, because it felt different from all the other things. It felt like it had cost something real. You could be reading stolen content.
Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. In the center of the floor was a room. And this was not the soft-angled warm room of Gerald's territory or the cradle room the dungeon had built without asking. A proper room, sharp-cornered, high-ceilinged, exactly the kind of room he built. Except in the middle of it was a single object on a stone table. A book. He did not have hands. He pressed his awareness against the cover and read the title through contact, through the walls of himself.
Very soon he concluded it was not a title, but a name. His name. His original name, before Vorrath, before the Consuming Dark and the Hollow Below. The name he had in the before-before that June had asked him about on that Saturday afternoon. He stood in the room for a very long time. Then he took the floor. All of it. He reclaimed it like he had reclaimed nothing else. He went back upstairs. June was asleep. He sat on the windowsill. He did not open the book. He was not ready for that yet.
But he knew where it was. System: Bond Strength: 91%. Floors Reclaimed: 23 of 31. The book. We've known about the book. We've been waiting for you to find it. We're not going to tell you what's in it. You know what's in it. You've always known. You just needed to be someone who could read it first. We think you're almost there.
