Jack Noctis stood out on the east side of his property, at the line of trees that marked the start of the forest that led back up the mountain. The land was higher there, allowing him to look over his home and its grounds and watch the people moving in and out. It felt strange to have so many people coming and going again. So the end of the problem looks curiously like the start of it. He tucked his hands into the pockets of his suit.
"I know you're there," he said without turning.
"You might as well come out." Abraxas stepped out from the trees and stood beside Noctis. He also put his hands in his pockets. Together they looked down on the ruined mansion.
"I was invited," Abraxas said.
"I know. Iset told me. She said that you were helpful." If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
"I'm glad to hear that they found my little bit of information useful."
"Did you come to find me, or was our meeting an accident?"
"Let's say it was a happy accident." Big Jacky turned his skull toward the demon for a fraction of a second, then looked forward again.
"Why are you here?"
"I had to know if everything worked out, Jacky. Call it an emotional investment." Abraxas motioned to the mansion below.
"May I go down to see how they're doing?"
"No."
"Jacky—""My people made it home safely thanks, in part, to you. I know that, and I'm grateful."
"And this is how you're thanking me?" The demon's mouth bent up in an ironic smile.
"No. To thank you, I'll absolve you of the need to give an accounting." Abraxas's smile morphed into another, more-forced smile. As it changed, it briefly took on the aspect of a grimace.
"An accounting of what?"
"Of the demon who worked with Grover Northrop, and what he was actually after." Big Jacky turned his head toward Abraxas just enough to look at the demon.
"You will be content with that." The silence between them was filled with the sound of the hard breeze breaking over the tree limbs, causing them to sway. Abraxas took a hand from his pocket. He held his tie to his chest as he inclined at the waist in a modest bow.
"Of course, Jacky." He took a step back before straightening, then turned to the woods. As he left, he called, "Give my regards to Emerra." Big Jacky didn't answer.
