The interior of the limestone cave was freezing as night fell over the upper Midbar. Ethan sat in the absolute dark, his back resting against the jagged stone wall while his fingers idly twirled his bronze trowel. To fight off the cold, creeping wave of real-world financial panic, Ethan leaned his head back and pressed his bare, clean palm hard against the exposed vertical face of the limestone cliff behind him. Zzzzt. A sudden, sharp kinetic prick vibrated through his fingertips.
[Linguistic Genesis Engine — Core Directory Mapping] Directory Core: כּ-פ-ר (K-P-R / Kipper — Cleansing / Atonement File) Ethan stared at the glowing letters, his breath catching in his throat. KPR, tracing the physical geometry of the characters. It's an entirely new class permission root. It's sitting right inside the limestone. A dry, rattling gasp echoed from the dark corner of the cave floor. Hilkiah had dragged his frail body up against a stone ledge, his tattered linen robes shaking.
He wasn't staring at the glowing light of a system window. His eyes were locked directly onto Ethan's hand, watching the young artisan physically follow the natural grain of the limestone.
"You trace the words Kippur, meaning to cover," Hilkiah whispered, his weak fingers tightening around the tattered leather bundle in his arms. He pointed a trembling hand toward the stone face.
"Outlander, where did you learn the language of my people?" Ethan stared at the levite priest, contemplating what to say to this NPC. I can't just tell him my class and the system taught me. He is an NPC, he'll just think I'm crazy.
"I can't read it," Ethan rasped, his voice flat but intense.
"I saw these symbols somewhere. What do these letters mean to you?" Hilkiah leaned closer, his weathered face looking deeply at the lines Ethan had traced.
"They are the three consonants that form Kippur. In the speech of my fathers, it is a physical instruction. It means to smear over, to lacquer, or to thoroughly paint a surface with a protective covering." The old priest reached out, his calloused thumb rubbing a patch of loose, powdery white lime dust off the limestone wall.
"Look at this white stone," Hilkiah said, his voice taking on the steady, rhythmic weight of a sanctuary keeper.
"This mountain is made of Sid —the white lime. In our law, when innocent life is violently cut down, the hot Dam spills onto the Adama. The ground is like a sponge; it drinks the fluid, but it cannot digest it. The soil literally begins to choke on the un-cleansed violence. It becomes a heavy layer of Damim —a sticky, toxic bloodguilt that cakes the soil." Hilkiah tapped his fingernail against the clean white dust on his thumb, a grim smile cutting through his wrinkles.
"We do not use gold to cure this land, outlander. We take this white Sid, grind it into a powder, and paint it thick, until the surface is completely white out. It covers the screaming Damim beneath a flawless, pristine protective barrier, turn the defiled back into something pure. We turn Damin into Tamim —bloodguilt into blameless." Ethan looked back at his bare palm, then at the white limestone cave walls. A single touch left a smudge of chalk on his skin, stark and clean.
