Someone had reinforced the ground-floor windows with steel plate bolted through the limestone frame. The main entrance had been narrowed to a single-file chokepoint with a barricade of concrete-filled oil drums flanking the approach. The roof carried a spotter's position made from scaffolding and tarpaulin. The modifications were practical. Sound, if rough. The compound sprawled along the harbour's edge in a chain of connected buildings.

It had an office, a warehouse, a boat repair shed, and what looked like a restaurant kitchen converted into a communal mess. People moved between them with the focused purpose of a community that had figured out, in the space of a week, that staying busy and moving forward was the difference between survival and collapse. And beside the warehouse, in the open air between the building and the quay, Arthur saw what the Gardiens did with their dead. Their kills, not their human dead.

Three boar carcasses hung from a boat crane, gutted and draining. Two women and a man worked beneath them with knives that moved in quick, practised arcs, stripping chitin plates and stacking them in sorted piles, separating joints, slicing the dark meat into strips. Nearby, a drying rack held rows of salted flesh curing in the Mediterranean air. The blood and brine was the flat metallic undertone that Arthur had been smelling since the transit chamber. Steve stopped walking.

"They're eating them," he said. But Arthur had seen it too, and for a second he kicked himself for not thinking of this earlier. The chitin plates in sorted piles weren't waste, they were material. He could see pieces already lashed to leather straps and stitched onto jackets, this was an improvised armour plate made from the shells of the things trying to kill them. The drying meat wasn't an experiment either. The rack was full. They'd been doing this for days. A basket of fish sat beside the butchering station.

The fish looked almost normal except for the faint luminescence along their scales, a shimmer that Arthur recognised as low-level Ether saturation. Even the harbour's catch was changing. Steve caught up to them at the entrance.

"If they've been eating Ether-saturated meat and fish with no ill effects, that changes the entire survival calculus. We're not dependent on canned goods and whatever we can scavenge from supermarkets. The food chain is adapting. We can adapt with it."

"Steve," Donna said.

"Focus. Harbourmaster first. Dietary revolution later."

The harbourmaster's office had been a harbourmaster's office before the world ended, and it still was. The same desk and harbour charts on the walls. The same view of the Vieux-Port through windows that were now reinforced with steel mesh. The woman behind the desk looked like she'd been running this port for thirty years and the apocalypse was, at most, an administrative complication. Nadia Adjani was perhaps fifty-five.

Broad hands, short grey-streaked hair, a face that had been weathered by decades of salt air and difficult decisions long before the sky turned violet. She wore a harbour authority jacket, the real one with the insignia, over a fisherman's jumper. She did not stand when they entered nor did she smile. She looked at each of them in turn, her gaze pausing briefly on Arthur's shield, reading the Ether luminescence the same way the gaff hook woman had. Then she spoke to a man standing at the window behind her.

He was tall, early forties, with a fresh scar that ran along his jawline from ear to chin. He wore military boots and a civilian jacket and stood in controlled, menacing stillness. Foreign Legion. Arthur didn't know how he knew, but the posture was unmistakable, the same bearing he'd seen in ex-military contractors on restoration sites. Rémy Touré listened to Nadia, then looked at the party with the assessing calm of a man deciding whether these three strangers were worth the trouble.

Steve translated as Nadia spoke.

"She says the patrol reported what happened on the quay. She says her fighters told her the man with the shield stopped a charging boar without moving. She says the woman with the axe killed two in the time it took her best fighter to kill one." Steve paused.

"She wants to know our levels." Arthur looked at Donna and she gave the fractional nod. Tell them.

"Seven," Arthur said.

"All three of us." Steve translated and the air in the room changed. Rémy leaned forward and a third person, a man Arthur hadn't noticed, sitting in the corner with a ledger and a pencil, looked up. He was late thirties, compact, with the quick eyes of someone who counted everything. Cédric Vidal. He'd been tallying something in the ledger. Now he seemed to be tallying the party. Nadia asked another question.

"How," Steve translated.

"How are we Level seven when her best fighters are Level five after a week of constant combat?" This was the negotiation. Tell too little and they won't trust you, tell too much and you lose a bargaining chip that you might need later.

"Steve. Tell her the truth. Most of it." He chose his words carefully.

"Tell her the old monuments, the temples, the churches, the ancient sites, they're not just history. They're part of a network. A system that was built to help humanity survive what's happening now. We've been following a trail through those sites since London." He continued after a breath.

"Each one has a test. Pass the test, you get pointed to the next. The trail brought us here through an underground connection between the sites." He paused.

"Tell her there's a site in Marseille we need to reach. And tell her we can't share all the specifics of how we know this. Not because we don't trust her. Because some of what we know isn't ours to share yet." Steve translated. Arthur watched Nadia's face as the words landed. She didn't interrupt or react. She absorbed information, incorporating it into the operational picture. She leaned back on her chair and responded to Steve.

"She says we are weaving magic tales, she does not believe a word we are saying." Arthur sighed. He had expected something like this.

"Ask her, does she deny seeing mutated animals? Or blue messages hovering in the air? Or people gaining attribute points?" Steve did. Nadia did not respond.

"Tell her, we are not forcing her to believe anything. We are simply passing through and would like to avoid trouble if possible. If she chooses to live in denial in the face of overwhelming evidence, that's her problem." The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. Steve arched an eyebrow at Arthur and got a nod from Donna instead. Rémy said something sharp. Steve translated: "He wants to know what we're not telling them."

"Everything we can't prove," Arthur said.

"We're not going to make claims we can't back up. What I can tell her is that we've activated four sites in London. Each one made us stronger. Each one pointed to the next. The trail led south and we followed it. That's how three people from London ended up on her quay at Level seven." Nadia listened to the translation.

She looked at Arthur for a long moment, the look of a woman who knew exactly what it looked like when someone was telling you most of the truth and being honest about the part they were holding back. The most respectful way to lie. Nadia and the two men stepped outside for about ten minutes. When they came back, Nadia asked two questions. Steve translated them one at a time.

"First question: will activating the Marseille site make things better or worse for her people." Arthur considered. He thought about what he'd seen at every node they'd activated.

"It shouldn't change conditions here," he told Steve.

"The system's already running. We're just proving we're allowed to use it. Though, it could increase the saturation." Nadia nodded.

"Second question," Steve said.

"What do we need from her."

Arthur needed information. Specifically, he needed Steve to have information, and Steve needed context that wasn't in any book he'd stolen from a London university library.

"The riddle," Arthur said.

"Steve, tell her about the riddle." Steve recited it. His French was steadier now, the adrenaline of combat and the focus of negotiation had burned away the rust. It wasn't elegant but it communicated. The moment Steve said "Lion's Port," Cédric looked up from his ledger. He said something and Steve's head snapped toward him.

"What?" Donna asked.

"He said 'Port du Lion.' It's a local name. The old harbour entrance, the original Phocaean anchorage on the south side, was called the Lion's Gate. There's a carved lion on the seawall." Steve was vibrating again.

"Lion's Port isn't a metaphor. It's a place name. The riddle's telling us to leave the old harbour entrance and go to the soldier's stone."

"Saint-Victor," Rémy said. He hadn't needed translation. The name had been clear enough. Leave the Lion's Port for the soldier's stone, Nadia spoke quietly at the mention of the abbey.

"She says no one goes near Saint-Victor. Not since what happened the last time." Rémy took over. He spoke in slow, deliberate French, pitched for Steve to follow. What he described was clinical and precise, a military debrief rather than a story. Eight scouts, his best people, were sent to assess the abbey as a potential forward position on the south side of the harbour. The approach was bad with creatures concentrated around the building in numbers they hadn't seen elsewhere.

The scouts had managed to push through and reach the abbey, entering the crypt. Two managed to get back to the entrance. One of them collapsed in the abbey courtyard. The other made it back to the harbour. He delivered his report and said the crypt had something made of people. Then he stopped speaking and he hasn't spoken since.

"Made of people," Donna said, creating a threat assessment file in her brain. Steve had gone pale.

"The crypt is built over a Hellenistic necropolis. Thousands of years of burial -" He stopped and did not finish the sentence. to the deep-set crypts, silent and alone. Arthur looked at Nadia.

"The riddle also mentions a Lady in Black. Something inside the crypt." Nadia answered immediately.

"The Black Virgin," Steve said.

"La Vierge Noire. There's a Black Madonna in the Saint-Victor crypt from the thirteenth century. Every local knows it." He looked at Arthur.

"That's the Lady in Black. That's line three of the riddle. The node must be near the statue." Under the hand of the Lady in Black, Touch the anchor where the shadows fall back. Arthur looked at the harbour chart on the wall behind Nadia. The abbey was marked on the south shore, across the water from the compound. Maybe a kilometre on foot.

"We need to get inside that crypt," he said. Rémy said something, flat and direct. Steve translated: "He says he'll give us two scouts who know the route to take us there but they won't go inside. He says if we don't come back, he'll mark our names in the same ledger as the seven."

They were given a room in the warehouse. Blankets, water and a fish stew with a metallic edge that they ate without comment. Fresh cooked food was a luxury. Cédric had brought the food personally and had lingered, counting their equipment with eyes that missed nothing, and asked Steve a question.

"He wants to know if we have anything to trade," Steve said.

"We just fought for his harbour," Donna said. Cédric responded with a small smile.

"Goodwill is poor currency when you have mouths to feed." Arthur respected that. A man who understood that gratitude didn't fill stomachs was a man who'd keep his community alive. A fourth person appeared while they ate. A young woman in a stained medical coat, dark-eyed and visibly exhausted, Dr. Maryam Belkacem. She checked the dockworker's gash from the quay fight, re-dressed it with supplies that were clearly running low, and then looked at the party.

"Any of you injured?" Steve translated. Once she was told that they were fine, she did not argue. She simply packed her equipment and walked away. There were others that needed her. When they were alone, Arthur laid the riddle out.

"Lion's Port - solved. The old harbour entrance. Soldier's stone - Saint-Victor. Deep-set crypts - the necropolis beneath the abbey. Lady in Black - the Black Madonna in the crypt." He looked at Steve.

"The last line.

'Touch the anchor where the shadows fall back.' What's the anchor? And why is an anchor in an underground crypt?" Steve thought about it.

"It could be symbolic. A carved stone, a painted mark, a feature. Could be anything really. If there's one in the crypt, near the Black Madonna, that's the activation point. But we won't know till we get there, I suppose."

"And 'where the shadows fall back'?"

"I can only imagine that something would happen with the activation," Steve said slowly.

"The shadows retreat. Maybe we see something?" Arthur leaned back against the wall. The limestone was warm and the harbour sounds filtered through the steel mesh on the windows. Water, voices, the distant clang of someone working metal. A community that had survived a week and would survive another, and another after that, as long as the waves didn't get worse and the food held.

"You are right, no point in speculating. We will have to see for ourselves," Arthur said finally.

"Dawn, we go at first light." Donna nodded and laid back on the cot. The professional in her knew the value of getting whatever sleep you can, before entering hostile territory. Steve sat motionless, staring at the wall, but Arthur knew he wasn't seeing limestone. He was seeing a crypt full of twenty-three centuries of dead, saturated with Ether, and something inside that was made of people.

"Steve," Arthur said. Steve looked at him.

"We've walked into worse."

"We really haven't," Steve said. But he picked up his Reacher and checked the blade, and that was answer enough. I watched them gut three boar carcasses and strip chitin plates for armour. They're drying the meat on racks in the Mediterranean air.

They're fishing from a harbour where the fish have a faint luminescence along their scales that my Resonance reads as low-level Ether saturation. The thing I cannot stop turning over is this. We solved Lion's Port because Cédric Vidal grew up calling the south anchorage Port du Lion. Without him we'd have spent the whole day with a tide chart. I don't think that's a coincidence anymore. The system isn't testing whether candidates can solve riddles.

It's testing whether candidates have made it into communities that can solve them for them. Which is a completely different selection pressure. You don't grind your way to the next node. You're being filtered for whether you can talk your way past someone like Nadia. Whether someone like Cédric trusts you enough to translate his own city for you. Whether you've earned the stew and the cot and the ten minutes the harbourmaster spent outside deciding.

the Gardiens watched Donna kill two boars in the time it took their best fighter to kill one. They saw Arthur stop a charging boar without moving his feet. The reason we are sleeping in their warehouse instead of on the quay is that we are visibly stronger than anything they have. That is what the trail has bought us. Whatever's in the crypt, it has to be calibrated for the next-level version of us. Which is a comfort, of a sort. A small one.

The system has been mathematically consistent, and consistency is what I'm choosing to sleep on.
