Hakeem stood in the centre of a dimly lit room, blood dripping down both arms and pooling at the tip of his sword. His legs were burnt black, twisted in ways that looked agonizing. He would have collapsed long ago if he could have bent his knees. The only solace he had was that most of the blood dripping from him wasn't his own. The air around him shifted, darkening until an impenetrable blackness consumed the room. He could no longer see anything. It was over. When he opened his eyes, he stared at a high ceiling.
An intricate mural depicting an epic war between Elves and Trolls stretched across its surface, vibrant and detailed. He sat up slowly, glancing at his arms. They were clean, the blood and wounds gone. He patted his legs quickly, his heart racing, but they, too, were unburned. Relief washed over him. Everything had been inside his mind. The strange Dwarf-like robot overseeing his Bloodline test had explained as much, though that knowledge hadn't made it any less gruelling.
System alerts blinked persistently in the corner of his vision, drawing his attention. He focused on them. Race has been upgraded to E Grade. Congratulations. Bloodline of the Shade Pillar obtained. Skill Shades Endurance (Bloodline) Obtained. Skill Shades Sight (Bloodline) Obtained. Skill Shades Fury (Bloodline) Obtained. Hakeem exhaled, a small smile tugging at his lips. Relief settled in as he processed the results. Taking a moment to breathe, he opened his status screen to examine his newfound power.

Hakeem could feel the increase coursing through his body, a tangible increase in strength, endurance, and clarity. As he glanced down at himself, he squinted at the odd sight. Wait… am I taller? He was. What had started as a challenging and gruelling day had turned into something extraordinary. Maybe, just maybe, it wasn't entirely a bad thing that Joe had dragged him into the Gate against his will. Nah. He smirked to himself. He hoped that asshole was having a much tougher time with his test than he did.
– Kairos sat, gazing down at his creation, a scale model of Buckingham Palace, or at least the exterior. He had no idea what the interior looked like, but he was pleasantly surprised by how good his replica had turned out. Even making twenty such models over the past few weeks, or was it months? He couldn't tell anymore. He wore a watch, so he knew the time, but the days had blurred together. One of the first things he'd noticed after entering the Gate was that his phone no longer worked.
The screen was black and unresponsive. At first, he thought it had shorted out, but maybe there was some EMP-like effect when crossing into the gate. He wasn't sure, and there was no one to ask. After being unceremoniously air-blasted into a doorway by the silver-skinned woman, he hadn't encountered a single living being. Only a disembodied voice had guided him, explaining the steps to pass his Bloodline tests.
He had spent two days, or what he thought were two days, refusing to do anything until he was let out and could see his friends. But the voice only told him to proceed with the tests. So, eventually, he gave up and began. Thankfully, the tests were simple: make this, copy that, and create something unique. He was grateful for how straightforward it seemed, though part of him wondered if it was too easy. This was his final task, and he'd passed every single one so far.
Thinking back, he almost laughed at how worried he'd been initially.
"This is a piece of cake," he said aloud, his voice echoing slightly in the empty space. Oh, how he missed cake. And pizza. And carbonara. Food of any kind. He hadn't eaten anything since these tasks began, which unnerved him. Did he not need to eat anymore? He didn't like that thought. But despite the time that had passed, he hadn't felt hunger once. Thirst was a different matter, though. He just had to ask whenever he got thirsty, and the voice would make a drink appear out of thin air.
It was convenient, sure, but not exactly comforting. He'd tried asking for pizza once. No luck. Stupid, no-pizza-giving voice. How was a man supposed to live without pizza? It was unacceptable. He stood and stretched his arms and legs, wincing as stiffness set in. His legs were sore, aching from sitting on the floor for hours. No furniture had been provided, not even a bed for when he got tired. Oddly enough, he rarely felt fatigued here. It was strange.
It felt like his skin absorbed energy, though he couldn't explain it. Again, he wished someone would answer his growing list of questions. The hardest part of this entire Bloodline test wasn't the tasks. It was the loneliness. He exhaled, his thoughts drifting to his family. Were they okay? They were probably worried sick by now; he'd been gone for a month with no explanation. That damn Joe. Kai clenched his fists. He swore to himself he would punch that spontaneous moron the next time he saw him.
"Congratulations, human. You have passed the final requirement for your new profession. Please stand by and accept the prompt." He blinked, startled. Profession? Did he go through all of this just to get a new job?
"Wait a second. What does that mean? Who am I working for now?" he asked the ceiling, his voice tinged with frustration. Profession Architect of the Lost Kingdom registered. Do you accept? The prompt hovered at the top of his vision, similar to his status or system messages— Architect of the Lost Kingdom. As cool as it sounded, he had no idea what it actually meant.
"Does this mean I have to work for this 'Lost Kingdom'?" he asked cautiously.
"Human," the voice replied.
"A profession is a designation similar to your class. It has no ties to any force or entity in the Multiverse. The name reflects the beings who created it. You are not bound to anyone else. Your future is your own." The explanation was unexpectedly thorough and, to his relief, reassuring.
"Thank you," Kairos replied, his tension easing. He focused on the prompt and accepted his new profession. Profession accepted, commencing body restructuring. Body restructuring? Kairos groaned inwardly. Why did everything that happened in this place lead to something new and nonsensical? He hated it here. His body began to glow, and within moments, he was hit with the most excruciating pain he had ever felt. He collapsed to the floor, unconscious, only to be jolted awake again by an even sharper wave of agony.
The pain lasted only a few seconds, but the sensation lingered, dragging on in his mind as if it had gone on for hours.
"I wish you'd ask before doing that," he grumbled, his voice hoarse with frustration. Slowly, he sat up and closed his eyes, trying to steady himself. Race has been upgraded to E Grade. Congratulations. Profession Architect of the Lost Kingdom(Rare) Obtained. Skill Matter Manipulation(Legendary) Obtained. Skill Basic Construction(Common) Obtained, Skill Fast Construction(Uncommon) Obtained.
"Commencing integration of Bloodline to Human known as Kairos," the familiar voice announced.
"Wait, now?" He exclaimed, but it was too late. The process had already begun, and his body was once again wracked with unbearable pain. He gritted his teeth, barely able to keep himself from screaming. He hated this place. Bloodline Primordial Creator Obtained. Skill Surveyor of Land(Bloodline) Obtained. Skill Creator's Mark(Bloodline) Obtained. Kai woke up panting, his chest heaving as he tried to steady himself. Blinking a few times, he looked around and remembered where he was.
To his side, the model of Buckingham Palace sat undisturbed, a strange yet comforting reminder of what he'd accomplished.
"Please tell me that is the last thing? Please," he pleaded.
"Congratulations, Human. You have completed your new Bloodline. The Exit is now open." He turned to his right to see a doorway waiting for him. He got to his feet, a mix of relief and trepidation swirling in his chest, and started toward the doorway. He couldn't help but wonder if the other two had finished their tests yet. As he stepped through the doorway, he rubbed his eyes. These things were weird. Were they even doors? Portals seemed like a more accurate description.
Before stepping into them, he couldn't see what was on the other side.
"Yo!" Kai's head snapped toward the voice. It was Hakeem. He was lounging on a couch, casually sipping a beer. A familiar beer. His eyes narrowed slightly as he peered at it. It was one of the beers he'd brought into the Gate. He remembered dropping the bag when the silver-skinned woman had sent him flying through a doorway. He walked over to where Hakeem was sitting. This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
"You been here long?" he asked, eyeing the beer.
"Just a couple of days," Hakeem replied, grinning.
"Marvos told me how much time had passed while I waited. You guys are really slow." Marvos? Oh, right; the silver-skinned lady. He sat down and grabbed one of the cans on the desk between the couches. He popped it open greedily and took a sip. It was wonderful. It felt like he hadn't had a proper drink in ages.
"Where did this furniture come from?" he asked, gesturing at the surprisingly cosy setup.
"Marvos made them appear from her storage ring when I got here," Hakeem replied, leaning back on the couch.
"She's got a ton of useful stuff on her. She gave me some books explaining what's in the tutorials. So I've been reading those." He motioned toward the books scattered across the couch.
"What is a storage ring?" Kai asked.
"It's like a portable storage place that you carry around on your finger. It's how she makes things appear from nowhere. She gave me one and said we all get one. They are massive. I could store everything inside my flat with barely any space taken." Kai stared in confusion, not understanding a word Hakeem had just said.
"Any sign of Joe?" He asked.
"Nope," Hakeem said, shaking his head.
"When I asked, she got very quiet."
"You don't think?" Kai started but didn't finish the thought.
"I doubt it's that serious," Hakeem replied quickly, though his tone didn't inspire much confidence.
"Damn," Kai muttered, leaning back on the couch and draining the rest of his beer. His mind drifted back to the day he'd been flung into the doorway, kicking off his Bloodline test. __ Joe watched as Marvos disappeared through a doorway that vanished behind her. Before leaving, she informed him that Hakeem and Kai had passed their bloodline tests and were waiting outside for him. She had also mentioned that two months had passed since they'd entered the Bloodline Gate. Two months—it was hard to comprehend.
Most of that time, he had spent either unconscious or enduring excruciating pain so intense that it made him want to tear out his tongue. At one point, he was sure he'd accidentally bitten it off. He couldn't help but wonder if he had angered some powerful being in a past life. How else could he explain why he deserved this level of torment?
"Are you ready?" Catalina asked. Joe glanced at her and felt a small sense of gratitude. Their relationship had grown more amicable over time, making the ordeal marginally more bearable.
"This is the last one?" he asked, his voice tinged with fragile hope. Catalina didn't reply; instead, she raised her hand with the black concoction. Without protest, he opened his mouth and drank it, bracing himself for what was surely coming next. But the pain didn't come. Instead, something entirely different happened. For a moment, he wondered if he had miscounted the potions. Was this a healing potion? But that didn't make sense—healing potions were never black.
It wasn't a healing potion, nor was it one of the body-destroying ones he had come to dread. It was something else entirely. A strange sensation began to creep through him, slowly at first but quickly building. It was unlike anything he had felt yet, and unease took hold of him as his senses suddenly sharpened to unnatural levels. He could feel the air around his skin, every tiny particle brushing against him. He could smell something unfamiliar, a strange burning scent he couldn't identify.
Panic swelled within him as he struggled to understand what was happening. His eyes darted wildly around the room, and when his gaze landed on Catalina, a chilling sight struck him. She wasn't masking her emotions for the first time in two months. Her expression was unguarded, and it nearly broke him. She was looking at him like he was about to die. But everything was going smoothly… wasn't it? She had seemed fine only moments ago. What had changed?
Before he could fully grasp the situation, something struck him—not his body, but something more profound. It hit his soul. In that instant, Joe knew, with absolute certainty, that he was about to die. He screamed. – Catalina poured the last concoction into Joseph's mouth. This damn Bloodline test was finally going to end, and Joseph was going to survive and go back to his world as a future powerhouse. He was strong in spirit, stronger than any mortal she had ever met.
She would finally be free to return to her main body. Beep. System message. Contact with Bloodline Gate rebooting. Beep, Beep. Divergent Aberration detected, Countermeasures engaged. Human designation Joseph Caldwell. Unknown Origin detected. Commencing eradication. Terminating Soul now. Catalina froze. She had never seen a system message like this before. But she knew that there was nothing she could do to stop the system from eradicating this human. Was all that time and effort for nothing?
Was she going to be stuck here forever? Seeing what he had gone through, she knew there was no chance that she would ever find another mortal who could go through that. All these thoughts passed through her mind in a fraction of a moment. She made a decision right then. A calm flowed through her; there was no fear, no regret, just a calm resignation that she would not see the outcome of her work. Why was she so calm? She was not entirely sure. It was an utterly mortal feeling. But she felt it anyway.
The wisp of existence known as Catalina Terravignion severed her Karmic tie to her host's body and died. __ The Matriarch of the Terravignion family and God of Eludia sat on the corner of her bed, listening to a tale of heroism that her daughter was joyfully regaling her with. She smiled; such an incredible soul she had, so full of life and spirit. Her daughter had just entered her twenty-sixth year of life and was preparing for her ascension to D grade and entry into the Tower of Past Lives.
A rite of passage for all powerhouses in the multiverse when they reached the peak of E Grade. Suddenly, she felt a pang of pain in her temple. One of her Karmic ties had been severed. It was connected to a Bloodline Gate she created when she first achieved Godhood—h ad her wisp in the Gate been killed? No, that was not plausible. A system decision? It had to be something of the sort. She waved her hand before her, grasping the last spark of Karmic energy. A portal to the Bloodline Gate opened before her.
The portal was smaller than she intended and blocked from entry. She peered at it, confused. It took only a moment for her to understand what had gone wrong. This was a newly integrated world that was being hidden by the system. The fact that she was able to open a portal at all was remarkable. Usually, this was impossible due to system control. She peered into the portal and saw her wisp falling slowly. It was dead.
She shifted her gaze to a tanned being lying on a table to the side with a system message flashing above him.
"Eradication," She mused to herself. Her daughter was at her side now, peering over her shoulder into the small shimmering portal.
"What is happening?" Rose asked, eyes shining with curiosity. Not taking her eyes off the scene, Catalina slotted the pieces of the puzzle before her into place.
"I am not entirely sure. Tell me, daughter, what do you see?" Catalina pursed her lips, giving her daughter a chance to piece together the scene before them. As Rose contemplated, Catalina expanded a domain around them both. She pulled out a talisman, breaking it in her hand. Time stopped within her domain, allowing them a few extra moments before the system forced the portal closed. After a few minutes of calculating, Rose spoke.
"From what I can tell, that…" she pointed at the body strapped to the table.
"Person is here for a Bloodline? It looks like he was in the process of some kind of procedure. Is that correct?"
"Spot on, proceed," Catalina answered, a smile spreading across her face. Her daughter was not a genius by title alone. Rose tapped a figure on her lip as she leaned forward, taking a closer look.
"I don't see anything which would draw the system's ire. Was it directed at that being or your gate?" Rose wondered, voicing the question but not asking.
"Maybe something within him, her, triggered a consternation?"
"Him, he is a human male, same age as yourself," Catalina said. She understood her daughter's inability to recognize the man's features. He was in a terrible state.
"Human," Rose mumbled.
"I have not heard of that race. Is it new?"
"As far as I can tell, this world is in the current integration that just started," Catalina said. Rose's eyes widened, and she leaned closer once more, peering down at the frozen human.
"Wow," Rose's face glowed as her eyes filled with wonder; she liked discovering new things.
"Did your wisp kill herself?" A piece of the puzzle clicked into place. Her wisp had taken its own life as a last-second gambit for the human before her. But why?
"Well done, daughter. You have pieced together the puzzle. The only question we cannot answer is why. Why would my wisp sacrifice herself for a human?" As this question flowed through Catalina's mind, her gaze darted to the hand of the human. Had he just moved? No, that was impossible; there was no way… It moved again. Catalina gasped as suddenly two things happened in the blink of an eye. Firstly, the dead human before her moved its hand, a bright golden spark emerging from its fingertip.
The spark resembled nothing she had seen before, but it had the signature look of a Bloodline Spark. The second thing that happened was that the system seed controlling this integration manifested itself as a tiny green leprechaun, floating just before the spark, a look of mischief painting its green face. The leprechaun turned to regard her. Then Catalina noticed the frozen form of her daughter beside her. The system seed had taken control of her Divine Talismans' effect…
"Hello, God. You should not be here; this is my integration. Why are you intervening?" the leprechaun danced as it spoke, gesticulating wildly.
"Seedling," Catalina gave a slight nod. She knew better than to act hostilely toward a system seed. Especially when it manifested in a system integration world, even she was powerless against it when it was in its own domain.
"I was just responding to a Karmic Severing; I did not plan to intervene in the integration." Catalina waved a hand, attempting to close the portal and be away from the seedling… but it blocked her attempt, holding open the portal from its end. Her tongue clicked in annoyance.
"Don't go yet, God; I have a favour to ask." The leprechaun danced some more upon the human's body.
"You have lost something important because of my actions. Therefore, I must give you something back in return." Catalina almost screamed as she watched the leprechaun pull out its system wand. She was powerless to stop what happened next. The leprechaun waved its wand, a fate line appearing from within the Bloodline Spark at the human's finger; the line extended out, touching the shimmering portal and passing through.
Catalina could only stare in horror as the fate line touched her daughter's hand and exploded in a cacophony of sparks and mana fluctuations.
"Let fate embolden the fallen!" The leprechaun screamed as it vanished from sight, and her daughter was released from her frozen state. Catalina moved in a blur as the portal started to wink from existence. She had only one choice: to save her daughter. She activated a divine skill; two sparks of rebirth burst from her hand and entered the portal before it winked out of existence. She cupped her falling daughter in her arms, gently laying her on the bed.
The blasted system seed had branded her and the human with a bond of fate. __ Rose awoke to the sight of her mother peering down at her… with a look of consternation upon her face. Suddenly, a burning sensation on her left breast made her gasp in pain. What was that? She tenderly ran a finger over the burning area. Something was there; with a tap of her hand, she was naked, feeling at the tender skin. Her mother moved and brought a mirror to look at the… tattoo on her breast. It was a tattoo of a ball of flame.
A weird, confusing sense of familiarity struck her like she had seen this ball once before. However, she could not pull forth the memory.
"Mother, what happened?" she mumbled, rubbing at her temple as she lay naked, staring at her reflection. After a moment, she turned to her mother, and the look on her face told her she was not going to enjoy the conversation that was about to follow. __ Marvos sat at her desk, frozen in shock. She had felt the moment her Mistress died. That alone would have been reason enough to shock her to her core. But the events that followed were even more shocking.
She had felt her Mistress's true body appear in the room, or at least a portal that led to her. Then she felt the moment everything froze. Something she could not comprehend had happened in a split second. She stood up and hurriedly made her way to a doorway that led to her now-dead Mistress's room. As Marvos entered the room, she paused in confusion for a moment. Where the body of her Mistress should have been now lay an egg. She approached the egg cautiously and picked it up.
She was suddenly overwhelmed as the voice of the God of Eludia greeted her.
"Marvos, my dear, do be a good girl and give this egg to that man I just saved. He will need to take it with him. Oh, and once he has left and the Gate has closed, you and I will need to talk." Sweat dripped down Marvos's face. The God of Eludia was angry. Oh no. __ Race converted to High Human. Race has been upgraded to E Grade. Congratulations. Profession Nature's Custodian(Legendary) Obtained. Skill Nature's Touch(Magic) Obtained. Skill Nature's Steps(Magic) Obtained.
Skill Nature's Keeper(Magic) Obtained Bloodline Light of the Eternal Spark Obtained. Skill Eternal Moment(Bloodline) Obtained. Skill Light of Uriel(Bloodline) Obtained. Skill Light Affinity(Bloodline) Obtained. Skill Space Affinity(Bloodline) Obtained. Skill Light's Guidance(Bloodline) Obtained. You have died. You have been revived. Joe blinked and opened his eyes. What the hell just happened? He wondered if anything was ever going to make sense again. So many things had happened.
Each one was crazier than the last. But this day, oh boy. This day had beaten them all. He wasn't sure why everything that had happened had been so clear to him. It was as if he had been pulled out of the moment and witnessed it all outside his body. He raised his hand slowly and felt his chest. It was hot, and he had a mark on the right side. It was a rose petal. He knew instinctively what it was as he traced a finger along its outline. He did not, however, have any idea what it meant.
He turned his head and noticed Marvos standing with what looked like an egg in her hands. She was staring at him open-mouthed. She probably thought he was crazy.
"Sorry," He looked down at himself and saw he was completely naked. He turned back to the silver-skinned lady.
"You wouldn't happen to have any clothes around here, would you?" Luckily, she did. Some clothes appeared out of thin air and dropped to the floor. She then made her way over to a desk and started sewing. Joe shuffled to his feet and quickly grabbed the clothes, dressing himself. These clothes were amazing, he thought, as they slid on smoothly. They felt light and comfortable but also incredibly tough.
"Joseph," Marvos said as she continued her task at the desk.
"Hi, that's me," he responded.
"Congratulations on your new Bloodline."
"Oh, um, Thanks," he replied a bit tentatively.
"Your friends are waiting for you," Marvos pointed to the open doorway behind him. Taking that as an order to leave the room, he headed out to greet his friends for the first time in over two months. __ Marvos stood silently for a moment after Joe had left. His race had changed to High Human? He also had a strange, new, unknown Bloodline. She was at a complete loss as to how that had happened.
Once this was all over and these three men had left, she would have to return to the Eludian Empire and explain what had happened to her true Mistress—a God. If she weren't so stuck in shock, she would have cried. __ As Joe exited the doorway, he saw his two friends sitting on a pair of couches, reading. He felt relief wash over him. He had survived. Holy smokes, he had survived.
"Dude, nice threads… But what happened to your face? Dude, you look like a completely different person." He looked up at Hakeem, who had just addressed him. He looked different? In what way, he wondered. He looked around, but there were only walls and no reflective surfaces anywhere.
"And it's about time you got here; we've been stuck here waiting for weeks," Hakeem continued.
"It's good to see you guys, too," Joe smiled.
"Do I really look that different?"
"Yes, you also look taller." Joe noted that Hakeem also looked a little different. He still had his dark complexion, but now he looked taller and had sharper features. Was that the right word?
"You have no idea what I went through there," Joe stated, putting physical appearance aside.
"I'm guessing it wasn't a walk in the park then?" Kai chimed in.
"No, it was not. But before I rehash you with any details… Is that beer for me?" Joe pointed to the remaining beer can on the table between the couches.
"I dunno, man. I don't think the asshole who dragged us into this mess deserves a reward. What do you think, Kai?"
"I agree, fuck that guy," Kai chuckled.
"You know what? I take full responsibility for my mistake," Joe said, touching his chest.
"Won't happen again, scouts honour." They both just shook their heads and started to laugh. Relief, evident in them all. Joe was just happy they had all made it out in one piece. He sat down and took a moment to assess his new status mentally as he picked up and drank the last can of beer.
