I parked the van near the front entrance to the admin building and everyone started to exit the vehicle. No one really said much as we were all both extremely happy TJ and his undead dungeon were dealt with, but also tired and weary from the weeks of brutal fighting. And not just from the hordes, but from everything since the system dropped on our heads. Now looking forward, what was going to be next? Would there be more hardships or would we have a semblance of normalcy?
With that in mind, I told my team to go shower, relax, and get some dinner since it was still dinner time in the main dining room. I likewise went to my apartment and showered. Dressing in something more comfortable, I went to the dining facility and met Denise, who was still working with the other cooks to finish dinner service. Denise came over and gave me a kiss and a hug, happy to see me returned uninjured and safe. I advised her that it was done.
TJ and the dungeon were taken care of, and we had sustained zero casualties. She sat me down with a large plate of one of my most favorite meals that she made: chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and a heavy amount of gravy smothering everything on the plate. Added to that, several dashes of hot sauce across the entirety, and warm baked bread to slop it all up, and I was in absolute heaven.
"God, I fucking love you," I said as she set my plate down on the table with a cold beer from our new brewer. Once dinner was completed, Denise and I went to our apartment in the admin building and stripped down to get in the shower. Yes, I had already showered the grit and grime from killing undead away, but there was no way I was going to miss showering with my beautiful wife if I could help it. Once clean… REALLY clean… we settled into bed.
I cuddled up behind Denise and tapped her wedding ring against mine three times, as was our ritual.
"Goodnight baby, I love you," I said.
"Goodnight baby, I love you too," she replied. The morning air was crisp, carrying a sharp, clean chill that bit at my lungs as I rounded the far curve of the stadium track. After waking, I decided to go for a run as usual, since Denise was already up and gone before dawn in order to get breakfast service prepped and ready to go. My running shoes beat a steady, unbroken rhythm against the packed dirt. Lap after lap, I pushed my pace, watching my breath form pale plumes in the pre-dawn shadows.
Overnight, the raw level-up energy had fully integrated into my nervous system, leaving my limbs feeling impossibly light and bursting with a fluid, terrifying grace. My stamina pool barely registered the exertion; it felt deeper, a vast reservoir that refused to drain. Normally, my next stop would be the small gym—the combat training facility housing the weight room, wrestling mats, and weapons dummies—where I would grind through my daily regimen of weapons work and hand-to-hand drills.
But today, the routine had to wait. Today, Novus was evolving. Slowing to a jog and then a walk, I wiped the sweat from my brow and pulled the police-issued radio from my belt. I keyed the channel, my voice cutting through the early morning static with absolute clarity.
"Joe, Zack, Tony. This is Derrick. It's time to clear the civilians from all the buildings. I'm headed to the control panel now, over." This had all been discussed last night and the word was spread by the guard units to all the citizens. As this wasn't the first time the settlement was upgraded for most of the citizens, it really wasn't that hard to get this organized quickly.
"Copy that, Mayor," Zack's voice cracked back a second later, sharp and alert.
"Perimeter squads are moving. We'll have the residential units clear in five minutes."
"Joe here. I'm pulling the early shift workers out of the kitchens and the forge now. We're on it." I walked briskly across the courtyard toward the main building. I crossed the threshold into the Mayor's office—the space that had once been the high school principal's office before the system rewrote reality. In the center of the back wall sat the heavy, metallic console of the Novus settlement terminal.
Its surface thrummed with a low, mechanical vibration, driven by the original dungeon core locked within its housing. Around it, the nine smaller circular recesses glowed with a steady, stable light, holding the mana crystals my team and I had provided from the first dungeon and the system store in order to upgrade the settlement's nine primary facilities fully operational at the Uncommon tier. Stopping before the interface, I focused my intent.
With a brief pulse of mana directed into my dimensional storage ring, the raw, dense heart of the conquered dungeon materialized in my hands. The new core was magnificent, pulsing with a deep, dark violet energy that felt heavy with the residual weight of the depths we had just broken. I held it over the console. Right next to the original core's socket, a section of the heavy iron face-plate ground backward, sliding open to reveal a second, identical central divot. I placed the new core into the recess.

The ambient hum died. The glowing lines of mana snapped to darkness. For a terrifying beat, the terminal went completely dead.
Then, a stark, pale-blue system window blinked into existence directly in front of my face, illuminating the dim office: [ALERT: PARALLEL CORE INTEGRATION DETECTED] Do you wish to permanently bind the Dungeon Core to the Novus Control Panel? [YES / NO] I didn't hesitate. I focused my mind on the prompt and selected YES. A sharp, deafening mechanical chime rang out from the console, followed instantly by a blinding flash of white energy.
A massive, visible shockwave of pure mana exploded outward from the control panel. It tore through the office walls, ripped across the old school buildings, and washed over the entire grounds of Novus in a roaring, thunderous crest. Outside, the very earth began to groan. I rushed to the window, gripping the sill as a low, tectonic rumble shook the foundations of the settlement. The transformation was immediate, sweeping, and beautiful.
Before my eyes, the modern brickwork of the school buildings began to ripple like liquid glass. The red clay bricks dissolved, their molecular composition restructuring, compressing, and hardening into massive, heavy blocks of interlocking gray stone that resembled the unyielding fortresses of old. The classroom buildings, which had been meticulously converted into single-story apartment units, began to rise.
A second story tore upward from the stone foundations, instantly doubling the living space for the citizens of Novus. As the structures expanded, they didn't encroach on the vital open farmlands or the stadium. Instead, the very space within Novus seemed to stretch and push outward, defying natural geometry. The buildings and fields literally expanded the local geography, shoving the boundaries of the world itself to make room.
At the original perimeter, the fifteen-foot-tall crenelated wall began to drink in the roaring mana pulse. The stone surged upward, thickening and rising until it stood at a towering twenty-five feet. At both the southern and northern entrances, the massive portcullises reinforced themselves, the iron bands thickening into dark, heavy bars. Flanking each of the two grand gates, the earth churned as stone block stacked upon stone block, forming two brand-new, fortified guard barracks to house the defensive squads.
A massive cascade of system text flooded my vision, flashing with golden authority: [SETTLEMENT EVOLUTION SUCCESSFUL] [Novus Has Transcended Current Grid Parameters] Previous Status: Hamlet Current Status: Town Core Matrix: Dual-Core Powered [TERRAFORMING SCHEMATIC APPLIED] * Secondary Perimeter Initialized: A new, 15-foot-tall crenelated perimeter wall has formed at a half-mile radius around the existing quarter-mile Novus boundary.
* Structural Reclamation: All existing houses once located outside the main gates have been swept into the secondary wall's protection and remade in perfect, pristine order. I looked past the inner, twenty-five-foot castle wall. A half-mile out, a secondary line of heavy stone battlements was rising from the dirt, locking down a massive new chunk of territory.
The scattered, mismatched civilian houses that had once sat vulnerable outside the safety of Novus were being completely broken down and rebuilt by the system's ambient power—re-emerging as flawless, sturdy stone dwellings arranged in neat, defensible streets. Behind me, the control panel gave one final, heavy metallic click. I turned back to the console. With the second core successfully bound, the interface had fully expanded.
A brand-new row of nine empty divots had slid forward into the light, waiting for the nine high-grade Mana Crystals I still carried in my ring. Leaving the panel for now, I turned and ran out of the office, my heart hammering as I descended the new stone stairwell. The rumble had stopped, replaced by the stunned, echoing silence of the town. I burst through the heavy stone main doors and headed straight for the center of the stadium field, where the citizens of Novus were gathered in a dense, murmuring crowd.
Joe, Zack, and Tony were already moving through the masses, their weapons sheathed but their eyes scanning the people.
"Status!" I called out as I jogged up to Zack.
"Is everyone accounted for? Did anyone get caught in the shift?"
"We got them out just in time, Mayor," Zack reported, wiping a hand across his forehead.
"The buildings moved fast, but the radio warning gave us the lead we needed. No one was trapped inside."
"We do have a few minor injuries from the crowd movement, Derrick," Joe corrected, stepping over from a group near the bleachers.
"A couple of twisted ankles and a scraped knee from people tripping when the ground started rumbling. Nothing major."
"Get the guard healers over to them right now," I ordered smoothly, my eyes sweeping the crowd to ensure the panic was settling.
"Have them tend to anyone who looks shaken up. Let the people know they are safe, and that the town has expanded to give them better, sturdier homes." Tony nodded, immediately signaling two of the guard squad's dedicated healers, who ran over with their hands already glowing with soft, mending mana. Within minutes, the twisted joints were straightened and the minor scrapes were sealed, leaving the citizens staring in absolute awe at the massive, ancient gray stone castle that had replaced their old brick sanctuary.
I stood beside my teammates, looking out over the double-layered walls and the pristine stone houses stretching out into the new half-mile perimeter. Novus was no longer a makeshift refuge. It was a fortress. And we were finally ready for whatever came next.
