WARHOL couldn't believe what he had done... Which was, what, exactly? He did not know. What had he done? He had his System identify what the new magical sphere was and the result surprised him: [New Magic Identified: Fusion Magic: Fire-Water]. [Accomplishment Unlocked: Originator: You are the first to successfully perform Fusion Magic. Impressive — for you, Warhol. Not impressive for your Kind, which should have done this centuries ago, but hey, who is keeping track? Wink, wink. Well, late or not, there are hundreds more combinations to discover, so get to it, Wizard Boy. Reward: Magic Damage Multiplier Unlocked] One, he did not care for how his patron God talked to him. Very un-Godly, in his opinion. Second, HUNDREDS of combinations? Third, a damage multiplier? What was that? He guessed he would find out in battle. Tickled his mind, though. A smirk crested his face. Unlocking hundreds of fusion magic combinations was a challenge and one he would gladly take on!
His first attempt at fusion magic resulted in 'Fire Water,' a magical substance which had the consistency of 'water' but with fire instead of water. It was a bizarre magic to hold in his hand. He let the fire water descend to the field and saw in mild horror how it quickly covered an impressive distance and gained more ground by the second, leading him to dose the spell with a [Cancellation] incantation.
His second attempt at fusion magic handled much the same as the first, except this time, he tried to focus on the 'water-side' of the equation instead of allowing the fire to take precedent. The second attempt proved fruitful. He brought the two spheres together — water and fire — and focused more energy unto the water side. Another powerful burst exploded from the union. His System again brought him the answer on its composition: [Fusion Magic: Water-Fire].
He sent the orb downward and let it crash into the same impact zone as the first. Where scorch marks met water-damage, now water — at first sight — existed except this was water which 'burned' with the intensity of fire. Anyone encountering this 'water fire' without knowing about its fiery qualities when going to take a drink would find their insides burning. He [Cancelled] the spell and returned the landscape to normal. What did he learn? That was a good question. He learned that fusion magic was strange.
He also learned that the difference between 'fire water' and 'water fire' was largely in the eye of the beholder, except when it came to taking a drink. So, yeah, a big difference, but only in appearance. Functionally, both 'sides' to the incantation appeared similar, which made him think why it mattered to him; well, to him, but also in the wider sense to magic — why was fusion magic so important when it seemed that, to him, the difference was just a matter of degrees, so to speak.
More experimentation would be needed. A lot more. Whatever the truth of fusion magic, 'fire water,' and 'water fire' would not be the end of it. Each was basic, too basic to tell him anything. If fusion magic was going to be useful to his study of magic, it would only be useful when he discovered fusion upon fusion and then fused those into advanced fusions. So much fusion... A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. So little time. Days turned to weeks.
Then weeks to a month. Warhol practiced his fusions non-stop. Literally, non-stop. His stamina was so high, he could work as long and as hard as he could without rest. Doing so made him feel weird, but he got used to it quickly. After so many days straight of not needing sleep and still feeling as fresh as a daisy, he wondered if this was what the Gods felt like? Always up, never resting, engaged in... whatever it was that the gods did to bide their time.
Being a scholar all his life, Warhol knew how to make a systematic study of the world. He knew, then, that the best way to unlock the secrets of the world, fusion magic, was to make his way down the list.
'The list' being the list of basic attack spells. Spheres, bolts, blasts, and the like. He performed fusions for everything: fire, water, earth, lightning, darkness and light, cosmic, neon, and so on. Much like his first experimentations, the net results of these were simply the same, but with whatever contour the offensive spell took — holy bolts with dark qualities, dark bolts with a holy core, and so on.
Things began to evolve when his experimentations went from simply offensive spells to defensive spells and teleportation spells. He found fusing defensive incantations, such as [Armir Skin] with [Cosmic Radiance] produced [Cosmic Armor], an incantation which had defensive properties almost a fraction of his draconic scaled skin system! Teleportation was where his experimentation produced strange results.
He charged a [Teleport] spell then imbued the portal with [Neon Barrier], somehow expanding the portal to many times its size. Transportation incantations and Neon magic went together to create bigger portals, which allowed, in general, for more people to travel through — a breakthrough in transportation by any stretch of an imagination. And on the experimentations went. Hour after hour. Doing this gave him insight into how malleable magic was when conducted in a fused way.
He used ream after ream of parchment to take note of the many different combinations he learned. Which was part of the problem: when he unlocked a new fusion result, he discovered that, that incantation could then be used with previous lower-leveled fused spells in addition to basic level spells. This effectively multiplied the number of new spells each single new incantation brought forth into the world.
Sure, it was intriguing to discover [Neon Gravity Bolt] or [Cosmic Healing Rain] but at the end of the day, such incantations weren't going to turn the tables with the fight with the Horror. Not unless he took those fusion spells and combined them with other spells which were fusions themselves! The point he was trying to make was that he was but one man. One man who could not catalogue all of the spells by himself, no matter how many hours he had or how much parchment he had... and he was running out of parchment.
He would need to go to several stores to buy more. Not that he felt like going to several stores to buy more. He sighed. He would need to let academics in on the revelation he discovered. Fusion magic. Fun... Warhol was an academic before he was a mage. He wanted to write a paper and explain his process and have that paper published in a reputable journal. There would be glory in that; what also had glory, though, was single-handedly saving the world from a cosmic Horror.
Another sigh and he teleported to Goodridge University, one of the top, if not the best, university in the world. If anyone could help him make sense of his astounding discovery, it would be the eggheads there. He [Teleported] and wound up in the main atrium of the school. He was in luck — it looked to be an academic gathering of some kind since hundreds of professors in their black and gold gowns. Seeing a podium to his right, he walked up to the podium and pushed aside whoever was speaking about whatever.
His announcement obviously took priority.
"Professors of Goodridge, my name is Warhol Chaucer. Though you might know me better as the Omni-Wizard. Rejoice, for today is a special day. Not just for me but for you since those that can help me will find their place in the annals of history." he spoke clearly and loudly into a device on the podium which amplified his voice.
"Why is today special? Because today, you see, well, technically a few weeks ago, but who is keeping track, I have unlocked fusion magic... I need some help with it. Oh, and please ignore my scales and wings."
