The first paper-white hand closed around Jorren's ankle. Serit's sword took it at the wrist. The severed fingers did not fall. They opened in midair, the seven-pointed Crimson Star burning across each palm, and crawled up the flat of her blade. Serit struck the stone hard enough to break two fingers loose. White fluid spread across the floor.
"Same bloodless filth as the western passage," she said. Three more hands pushed through the crack. They had no arms behind them. Only folded lengths of paper-white flesh, jointed like fingers and covered in lines too small to read. One reached for Jorren. One turned toward Dalen's blackening branch. The last pointed at the copper driven through Kael's palm. The Cinder Seal opened beneath his heart. Heat rose. Kael sent it down to the ruined core gate, around once, and broke it apart with his next breath.
The hand kept coming. Vaelthar sounded offended.
"You could have burned it."
"Maera has expressed concerns about my health."
"The healer is narrow-minded." Maera tightened the bandage around Kael's ribs without looking up.
"Tell the voice in your head that I can hear your half of the conversation."
"It says you are narrow-minded."
"It can wait in line." Lysara caught Kael's right wrist before he could pretend the exchange had improved his condition.
"No fire."
"I had gathered that."
"You gather many things immediately before doing the opposite." The court wrote above them. MEDICAL RESTRICTION REAFFIRMED. FIRST CLAIMANT CAPACITY REMAINS LIMITED. Kael looked at Lysara.
"You have allies in the architecture."
"It has known you longer than I have." Serit drove her heel through the hand reaching for Jorren. The Crimson Star flared. Instead of retreating, the other hands folded around her sword arm. Orwen moved. His shadow moved three steps later. The man caught Serit's shoulder and pulled her back. His delayed shadow swept through the space she had occupied, and the paper hands seized it. Orwen made a strangled sound. Black writing raced from the hands into the pale split of his shadow.
The seventh witness lifted one dead finger. FOREIGN PROCESS ENTERS CALLED TESTIMONY. AUTHORITY REQUIRED. Every Crimson Star opened. Ilara Sorn's joined name strip turned above the stage in answer. The archive vessel smiled.
"Acting authority remains upon the instruments." AUTHORSHIP ASSERTED. Lysara's hand tightened around Kael's wrist. The hands wore Ilara's seal. They had broken through the passage immediately after Dalen demanded the name of the white-tower receiver. Too immediate. Not a rescue. A receipt.
"Orwen," Kael said. The senior disciple was on one knee, gripping his own throat while the sixth witness line held him inside the arena.
"What are they?" The archive vessel answered first.
"Office instruments. Their authority is valid." Kael kept his eyes on Orwen. Limited examination permitted questions. The vessel still expected him to waste one on an argument. The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there. Orwen understood.
"Receipt hands," he said.
"The old Office of Testimony used them when a severed witness could not be moved. They extracted the destination from the body and carried it to the receiving chamber." Jorren arched against the stone. Black letters moved beneath his skin toward his throat. The hand around his ankle pulled.
"Did Ilara command these?" Kael asked. Orwen stared at the stars. Three years of fear passed across his face before he spoke.
"No." The hands stopped. Orwen forced the rest out.
"Ilara suspended every receipt instrument under her authority the night she issued the living-transfer countermand. I delivered the suspension to the western observatory myself." The split shadow tightened around his neck.
"And when the observatory reported that she deserted," he said, "I allowed the suspension to disappear with her." TESTIMONY AGAINST INTEREST ACCEPTED. CRIMSON STAR VALID AT CREATION. PRESENT COMMAND NOT AUTHORED BY ILARA SORN. AUTHORITY BORROWED AFTER SEVERANCE. The stars in the white palms split down the center. The hands convulsed. Serit tore her sword arm free and cut through two more wrists. Paper-white fluid sprayed the western wall. The crack widened anyway.
Something behind it was trying to pull the entire passage into the arena. The archive vessel's shelves rattled.
"The destination belongs to the receiver." Kael watched Jorren's skin. The black letters were not moving randomly. They were fleeing the hands.
"No," he said.
"The destination belongs to the witness carrying it." The vessel turned his borrowed face toward him.
"You cannot challenge."
"I know." He looked at the seventh witness.
"Can a called witness answer by record when speech has been severed?" The dead mask tilted. RECORD MAY TESTIFY TO ITS OWN WITHHOLDING. The open eye beneath the stage fixed upon Jorren. His back struck the floor. Black writing tore upward through his throat without becoming sound. It spread across the air one line at a time. DESTINATION: MOONSPIRE WESTERN OBSERVATORY. LOWER RECEIVING CHAMBER. NINTH BELL. The receipt hands pulled harder. Jorren's heels scraped over stone. Serit planted herself across his body.
Bren seized his shoulders. The young guard's face had gone bloodless, but he did not let go. One final line remained beneath Jorren's skin. The archive vessel lunged. Stone around its knees cracked. Dalen moved his sword from the contaminated branch and drove the point through the vessel's white robe. The black wax in his Fourth Gate surged toward his heart. He gasped.
"Read it," he said. The court pulled. The last line came free. RECEIVER: PRECEPTOR CALDUS RANE. Silence struck the arena. Vaelthar went still inside the Seal. Orwen stared at the name.
"That is impossible." REFUSAL RECORDED.
"Caldus Rane was the man beneath the western archive nine years ago," Orwen said quickly.
"The first victim of Severance I ever saw. He was no Preceptor. He was begging us to remember his name." Vaelthar's voice returned without mockery.
"And I knew a Caldus Rane before Moonspire laid its first white stone." Kael felt the ancient being's hatred settle coldly behind his ribs.
"The same man?"
"Names are doors. Your enemies learned to change who waits behind them." The court wrote. NAME CALDUS RANE RECORDED ACROSS INCOMPATIBLE LIVES. ORIGINAL IDENTITY UNPROVEN. PRECEPTOR STANDING DERIVED FROM SEVERED RECORD. WHITE-TOWER RECEIVER IDENTIFIED. The receipt hands tore themselves open. There were no bones inside. Only narrow shelves of stolen writing. The archive vessel screamed with all the voices it had borrowed. The hands rushed for Dalen.
The black wax in his judgment branch crossed the last inch toward his heart. Miren reached from the coffin.
"Dalen!" He looked at the clean branch running from his blood. Then at the contaminated standing Marrek had spent ten years teaching him to worship. His sword was already inside the vessel. He left it there. Dalen caught the blackened gold with both hands. The flesh of his palms split.
"I release Aric Veyr's succession standing." The court answered. RELEASE VOLUNTARY. FORFEITURE PERMANENT.
"I release the judgment that made my life useful to your house." Othran flinched. Marrek surged against Serit's cord.
"Dalen, do not—" Dalen pulled. The golden characters came out of his Fourth Gate like a chain dragged through living flesh. He did not scream until the last black letter cleared his body. Then the branch broke. Gold and black ash swept across the stage. The receipt hands caught the fragments and burned from their fingertips inward. The stolen Crimson Stars vanished last. Dalen collapsed beside his sword. His clean blood branch remained. The Fourth Gate did not. ARIC SUCCESSION STANDING RELEASED.
VEYR BIRTH BLOOD RETAINED. FOURTH GATE DAMAGE RETAINED. SECOND CLAIM ACTIVE. ASCENT REMAINS COLLATERAL. Marrek stared at the empty place where his chosen heir had been.
"You threw away everything." Dalen rolled onto one elbow. Blood ran from both palms.
"No," he said.
"Only what you put inside me." For once, Kael had nothing sharp enough to improve the answer. Miren did.
"My son," she said. Dalen closed his eyes. The words hurt him more than the release. The western wall sealed around the last burning hand. Jorren lay still beneath Serit and Bren, breathing shallowly. His shadow had not returned. The court made no promise that it would. DESTINATION TESTIMONY RECEIVED. ERASURE REMAINS. The seventh witness faced the coffin. BURDEN ELECTION PENDING. ONE HEIR MUST REMAIN. Miren looked first at Dalen.
Without Aric's judgment standing, he was no longer one of the two heirs counted by the burden. The court confirmed it. ONE HEIR REMAINS ELIGIBLE. FIRST CLAIMANT. Lysara went very still beside Kael.
"No," she said. It was the first thing she had said that the court did not bother to classify. Miren's gray fingers curled over the coffin lid.
"If I refuse to speak?" PRESSURE INCREASES WITH DELAY. The copper filament through Kael's palm tightened. Maera swore and pressed both hands over the wound. Miren looked at him.
"I gave you one breath sixteen years ago because I owed your father my life. I have spent every year since wondering whether debt made that mercy or cowardice." Kael could barely feel Lysara's grip now.
"Did you decide?"
"No." Miren's honesty made the stone around her coffin recede.
"But Dalen has just chosen to live without the inheritance we forced upon him. I will not write it back by naming him again." She looked at her son.
"And I will not send either of you to the white tower while a stolen dead man's name waits there." Dalen pushed himself up.
"Mother."
"You asked if I would have chosen you." Miren's voice broke only once.
"I choose the life that is yours." Then she faced the court.
"Kael Veyr remains." Lysara's hand left Kael's wrist. For one terrified instant, he thought she was pulling away. Instead, she took his right hand and held it hard enough to hurt. The open eye filled with white fire. ELECTION MADE. FIRST CLAIMANT DEPARTURE WITHHELD. MIREN VEYR RELEASED UPON TRANSFER OF BURDEN. TERM OF REMAINING: UNTIL THE WHITE TOWER ANSWERS FOR THE NAME IT RECEIVED. The coffin opened. Miren drew her first free breath in sixteen years. Beneath Kael, the treatment cloth began to sink into the stage.
Lysara did not let go. The court noticed. NON-ELECTED WITNESS MUST DEPART.
"Then it can ask politely," she said. Kael looked up at her.
"You should go."
"You should survive."
"We have both developed unreasonable demands." Her eyes shone, but her voice remained steady.
"This one is not a misunderstanding." The stone reached Kael's shoulders. The last thing he saw was Dalen kneeling beside the mother he had buried, one ruined gate empty beneath his ribs. The last thing he felt was Lysara's fingers slipping from his. Then First Testimony closed over Kael Veyr. And far above the buried court, somewhere beneath a white tower and a silent ninth bell, someone wearing the name Caldus Rane opened his eyes.
