Chương 58: Growing Paths

Mark made his way back to camp while creating a more structured trail. The path he followed was not new; they had taken it a number of times heading to or from the cave, but this time it was made with purpose. He took his time to make it a little wider and more visible than it had been in the past. He put small piles of rocks as trail markers along the way. This took longer than the previous trail as he was working alone, but it felt rewarding.

There was a new outpost in his zone, and if he connected it to his, he was sure that there would be a benefit to all of them in the long run. It was near dinnertime when he made it to the camp. Dale was there cooking, and Tom was working on what had to be a leather chest piece. When he finally sat down, Tom looked over and said.

"Did you check the settlement interface? It's ready." Mark had been so occupied in doing the work of making a proper trail that he had forgotten all about why he was making it. He had realized about halfway back to camp how much better it would be with a trail. More people could visit. The trips would be safer. And one day they might be able to get one of the carts to help transport heavier items. Mark finally opened up the settlement interface, and before he could even find the option, a screen opened up.

[Settlement Requirement Completed] Maintained Water Access • Connected Pathways Outpost Level 2 requirements fulfilled. Then another window appeared. [Outpost Upgrade Available] Forest's Rest may now advance to: Outpost Level 2 Upgrade now? Mark was pleased they had worked as a group to complete this requirement quickly. Granted, had they realized this was possible, they would have created this a week or two back, but better late than never. [Outpost Upgraded] Forest's Rest — Outpost Level 2 Then another message.

[New Outpost Benefits Unlocked] Expanded Settlement Storage • Settlement Contribution Recognition • Improved Rested Bonus • Route Marker Recognition • Settlement Task Tracking As he looked over the list, most of them were straightforward. But his eyes lingered on two that stood out to him. He first looked at settlement contributions. Mark was excited about the possibilities this opened up. They could get benefits for doing what they should do anyway. He then looked at settlement task tracking. Mark had just gotten finished reading this when Dale called out that it was time for dinner. As he was dishing up the food, he said.

"That's new." After bringing it over to the table, he set the first plate down and went back for the other two. When he finally sat, he said, "I just got experience for settlement food production." Mark sat down next to Tom, and the three of them discussed the new upgrade and this new opportunity for XP growth. When dinner was complete, they all discussed the needs they had. Mark talked to Dale about the smokehouse that Lakeside had. And he even talked about the chickens and goats.

Dale perked up about the chickens and goats; they were great food resources. Then Mark said, "Oh, I forgot to give this to you earlier," and pulled out a container of goat's milk." Dale almost cried as he pulled it out of Mark's hands.

"I forgot to tell you I made bread out of the wheat, and when we ate it, the only thing I could think about was that I really wanted butter on it." They were about to go to bed when Mark received another system message. [Cave Adaptation Initiated] Sustained expedition activity has triggered cave evolution. Evolution will begin after current expedition instances conclude. Estimated Stabilization Time: 18 Hours Mark then said to the other two.

"Just got a system message about the cave. An evolution has been triggered. In 18 hours it will be ready, so looks like more changes are coming." Mark stood up and turned toward his A-frame and the bird came streaking into camp, circled a couple times, and then flew off. This caught everyone's attention, so they looked around to see if it was going to land. But instead of the bird, they saw Ava and Bramble coming back into camp.

Ava ran over to them, not realizing anyone would still be up, and excitedly said to Mark.

"I leveled up again. Made level 7; if you keep being a slowpoke, I will hit level 8 before you and get my class." She then told them about all the things they had done, she had found a bunch of plants that Bramble insisted were good, so she gathered them she talked about her bird plucking things off the ground and flying over to them and dropping them and how Bramble would get them while stunned and they would kill them. She explained all the places that she had traveled and explored.

Told them that she found trails and a few areas that the bird warned her away from. She planned to spend all day tomorrow doing the same and see if she could level up. When she finally got done, she went over to the cook's workbench and started pulling out all the items she found, both the plants and meat and some vegetables and berries, and put them on the table for Dale. Ava then said.

"What the heck, I just got a message from the system about contributions to camp welfare and over one third of the experience needed to hit level 8." All three of the men just sat and looked at the pile of items she had put on the table. Tomorrow was going to be an interesting day. Mark wondered if Ava would really beat him to level 8. How much could he gather or craft to outpace her?
