Cyrendale arrived at the jungle gate a little too fast and had to dodge some startled men. Some shouts and swords drawn had him holding his hands up to calm them.
"My bad my bad! Didn't see you there! Is there someone important around? Oh yeah. Some guy names History sent me." The men held him at sword point for a minute or two while one ran to get whomever was in charge. And Cyrendale started dusting the branches and bark off his pearly armor while he waited. The camp wasn't very large and he wasn't actually in any danger. It would just be easier to work on the gate if the locals were on his side instead of trying to kill him while he needed to focus.
Seeing two men approaching in different uniforms but both holding an air of command he addressed them.
"Ah just the men I was trying to find! So I'm here to update the gate and I would really appreciate it if people stopped pointing swords at me." The man with the black cloak over his sword arm and shoulder responded with an off putting manner.
"Who are you, how did you hear of the gate, and where is your company?" The other man raised an eyebrow and put a hand over his face before responding.
"I apologize for this fool here, he seems to think he is in charge for some reason. My name is Fitz, I'm a commander for this expedition and this man beside me is Carl. Our forces have joined to maintain control of the gate until reinforcements arrive to secure the other side. Looking at your armor I can assume you're an elite from another kingdom. As my companion here doesn't recognize you I will need to confirm where you came from." With that the scout captain motioned for soldiers to disperse.
Couldn't exactly hold a conversation with someone clearly this wealthy and strong by sword point. He did seem to have made the trip solo. That meant he wasn't incompetent. Captain Carl made a tut noise and crossed his arms while maintaining his scolding stare.
"My name is Cyrendale, I come from another world and some guy Hester said you would let me through to make updates on the gate."
"You mean Hesties don't you." Fitz replied with a raised eyebrow. Powerful indeed if he felt he could get the lords name so blatantly wrong among his troops.
"Ah" wincing, "yeah that's the one. Hesties. The broad shouldered warrior type with a uniform a bit fancier than yours and his hair slicked back into a pony tail?" Relaxing his posture some more, Fitz motioned as he turned.
"Alright mister Cyrendale, the gate is this way. How long should we expect your assistance? And are there more coming to assist on the other side?"
"Oh I'm just here to update the gate. The rest is on you. I don't have time to mess with exploration or base building." Fitz breathed out an exhausted sigh.
"Alright then there is the gate" he pointed past the barricade.
"If you're going to the other side I will warn you that it's being held by some beast lizard with a bone tail. Killed a lot of our men. Let us know if you need anything." With a nod Cyrendale moved to the gate and began his work.
While the strange pearl man from another world began his work, Captain Fitz waved for his ally Captain Carl to follow. The arrogant man did not like being sidelined and would express it very deeply soon enough. Before his tirade began, Fitz would give him an outlet.
"Carl, when that man enters the gate to update the other side, we will send a forward party. He is plenty powerful enough to fight whatever is over there and when he kills it we will hold the new area. I will seed that mission to your command if you ensure me that you will keep the men quiet." The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. Captain Carl had clearly not expected this. The chance to lead his own party into another world. The awards write themselves sometimes.
He would be honored as a hero to the kingdom. It was about time someone let him make decisions around here.
"Sounds like a fine plan young man, I will gather the men. Once we establish ourselves we should send a runner every hour for updates." Carl stood with pride at the recognition of his station.
During the next few hours as Cyrendale finished up his rune work, the soldiers gathered behind him in a loose formation. Most just gawked at his blurry movements. Nobody approached and that was all he wanted. Once his work was complete he stood up from the squat he had held for the rune nearest the jungle floor. Turning around with a clap.
"Alright I'm off to the other side. I'm assuming you boys are planning to come along?" At that he got several nods and he could see the pompous leader from earlier in the distance begun rushing over to the areas. With a chuckle he turned back around and walked into the gate. Passing through was always an odd affair as the ground always seemed level but the black void in front of his eyes blinked into another world's vegetation.
With a quick look around and a wince at the damage in the area he turned and walked to the side allowing the soldiers to come through behind him. Soon after the man named Carl entered and lead the way for nearly a hundred men to follow, they set up a quick perimeter before relaxing and beginning the recovery process for salvaging whatever they could and building new tents. It wasn't even an hour into his work when Cyrendale heard the commotion. A scouting team was returning with a startling report.
The leader received the report and interrupted his work. With a clearing of his arrogant throat, "AGHEM! Excuse me sir, it seems the lizard beast is nearby and will likely come through here within the hour. How would you like to proceed. Our men cannot handle it. If you wish to work in peace then you will need to simply kill the beast." Cyrendale turned after finishing the rune he was working on and squinted at the game this man was playing. He even had the nerve to smirk at a celestial level cultivator?
"Whatever. Which way is it?" The arrogant captain gestured to his scout who replied with a pointed finger, "that direction, sir. Give or take a mile. It was not aware of our scouts and was walking a slow path in our general direction."
"Thanks killer." He responded with a thumbs up and took off with a comfortable walk. The two men just looked between each other with creased brows then back at the pearl white man who didn't seem to care at all. About anything. It took less than half an hour before they heard a huge crash and the body of the giant beast flew into camp crushing a swath of freshly placed tents. One man was knocked on his ass, but somehow nobody was hurt. Everyone panicked tho.
One man even jabbed a sword into the beasts neck before they all realized it wasn't moving. It was dead before it landed. A healthy laughter rang from the wood line as the shiny armored man came back into the clearing without a care in the world. That was the moment Captain Carl realized how drastic the power difference was between them. That was the moment all the men realized that this carefree man could end them all if he felt even the slightest temptation.
"Thank you sir, nobody should bother you for the foreseeable future!" Carl spat out attempting to keep his military bearing in front of his men. With a slight chuckle Cyrendale went back to working on his finale gate.
A loud crash started Blick from his relaxing inside his swinging tree bed. He had been hanging out just trying to decide which direction to walk off into to find the most interesting things. The sound of several trees being smashed and some shouts had peaked his curiosity. With a shrug he untied his bed and rolled it up before strapping it to his back, before climbing out of his tree and running off towards the sound.
Everything had settled down by the time he got close to where he remembered the gate so he slowed down and approached with a bit more stealth. If the soldiers had been killed or forced off again it was likely too dangerous for Blick to take on. But curiosity was his biggest strength and his most dangerous weakness.
