She was torn, because of the recent thoughts she'd had about some of these different stats. She was envious of Zoey's ability to function on three hours of sleep each night, and wanted to dump 20 points into Sleep Fatigue Resistance right away. She was tired right now, having woken up way too early, but was too excited to go back to sleep now. If she doubled that stat, would her fatigue just melt away? She also remembered her leg injury after fighting those tier 2 bandits outside Portish.
The wound had healed quite quickly compared to a mortal, but much too slowly for Kiara's liking. Even just doubling that stat would double her healing rate, and would only cost her 30 points. 290 was way more than she had been expecting to be able to spend, and she was sorely tempted to put some into her Healing stat right away. She also remembered how she tired out much more quickly than the bandits had when she fought them.
Against tier 1s, she didn't have to worry as much, but against a group of tier 2s she had been quite exhausted by the end. Improving her Endurance was pretty high on her priority list. More important than all of that though, was her Strength stat, as well as Durability to some degree. Those two stats had kept her alive in all of her fights so far. Being faster than her opponents helped more than she could begin to describe.
She knew she would probably end up putting most of her points into Strength anyways, and the World Engine was recommending she put 40 points there, so she decided to start with that. She was surprised when it maxed out at 300 though.
Unspent Points: +279 Strength: 289 => 300 (MAX) (Suggested +40) Mind: 100 (MAX) (Suggested +10) Endurance: 58 (Suggested +10) Healing: 32 (Suggested +90) Sleep Fatigue Resistance: 22 (Suggested +10) Food / nourishment requirement: 22 (Suggested +25) Durability: 109 (Suggested +55) Life Expectancy: 67 (Suggested +50) Now she really needed to think about where to put the points. With Strength and Mind both maxed out, she tried thinking about what would be the most beneficial to her moving forward.
She suddenly thought back to when Kane had slammed everyone with his aura, and her stats had all dropped by half. If she ever needed to face down a tier 4 with a strong aura, she wasn't sure how that would play out. Her Strength would have an effectual score of 150, leaving her much slower than her opponent. She decided to pause on spending the Stats points, and instead take a look at her reward points. She had 2 reward points available to spend, since she had never spent the one from her tier 2 upgrade.
Reward Points: 2 [Upgrade Stats (tier-based)] cost: 1 point. Gain +290 points to spend on stats [Guaranteed Advancement] cost: 1 point. The normal advancement times for each tier of your class will be capped at 1 year. Advancements that happen before that are unaffected. [Stat Checker] cost: 1 point. Gain the ability to view other people's stats. [Limit Breaker] cost: 1 point. Gain the ability to upgrade your stats up to double their original MAX value. [Soul Space 2] cost: 1 point.
Your soul can function as a spacial storage device, accessible only by you. The space itself will be spherical, with a diameter of 10 feet. Anything placed in the soul space will enter a time stasis. As a bonus, this space can serve as a coin denomination exchanger for a 5% fee. [Early Personal Aura Negation] cost: 1 point. Others' magical auras will have no effect on you. [Bastion of Progress] cost: 1 point. Select five individuals whose bodies will be modified to allow for improved spiritual connection.
Their tier progression speeds will be permanently doubled after a brief period of pain while their body is reforged. [Spiritual Shaman] cost: 1 point. Select one person to have their spiritual affinity for magic improved by a single tier. Warning: This person will undergo a period of intense trauma while unconscious for three days. Whoa! She had some new options. As always, she was heavily debating purchasing the [Limit Breaker] reward.
That would allow her Mind stat to go up to 200 and her Strength stat to go up to 600. Even at her current speeds, it was sometimes hard to keep up mentally with how fast everything happened in a fight. Having a Mind stat twice as high as anyone else would give her an undisputable edge in any fight. The same could be said for being twice as strong and fast as everyone else too. Her 279 unspent points would feel much more valuable if she could overclock those two stats.
[Early Personal Aura Negation] was compelling just for what it was. With her Mind and Strength maxed out, she was guaranteed to be just as fast or faster than anyone else she fought, barring someone's aura wiping out her stats. The only reason she hesitated was that she didn't want to waste a reward point. All things considered, it certainly looked as if she would get that ability when she reached tier 4, even if she hadn't purchased it. Speaking of advancing to tier 4, her next upgrade was two whole years away.
Up until now, [Guaranteed Advancement] hadn't seemed very worthwhile, but now it was looking pretty juicy. Cutting her next advancement time from two years down to one would be amazing. She also considered the two new reward options. [Bastion of Progress] was interesting. The altruistic side of her wanted to buy it just to help her family progress more quickly. The same went for [Spiritual Shaman].
If she purchased those two rewards, someone would be able to reach one tier higher than they otherwise would, and five people of her choosing would progress twice as fast. Seeing her own tier advancement times becoming so long though, she wasn't sure how useful those would be in the short term. Helping someone advance from tier 1 to tier 2 offered very little benefit to Kiara's situation. Even helping someone like Zoey advance from tier 3 to tier 4 might not help as much as improving her own abilities would.
She wasn't trying to raise an army here, she really just wanted to live a safe, peaceful life. Well, if she was being honest with herself, she rather enjoyed sparring and fighting, but she wanted those around her to live a safe, peaceful life. She figured the best way to help ensure that reality was to be strong enough herself to protect the ones she loved. With those thoughts in mind, she decided to start by purchasing [Limit Breaker]. As she did, she literally felt some kind of limit being loosened in her soul.
She tried to latch onto that feeling, to follow it to its source to see what she could discover, but it immediately slipped from her grasp. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. After that single, fleeting moment, she felt normal again, except now her stats page was different. Not only had the '(MAX)' disclaimers been removed from her Mind and Strength stats, but now she could suddenly see the maximum allowed for each stat.
Unspent Points: +279 Strength: 300/600 (Suggested +10) Mind: 100/200 (Suggested +10) Endurance: 58/400 (Suggested +10) Healing: 32/4000 (Suggested +90) Sleep Fatigue Resistance: 22/400 (Suggested +10) Food / nourishment requirement: 22/200 (Suggested +25) Durability: 109/10000 (Suggested +55) Life Expectancy: 67/3000 (Suggested +50) Huh. She hadn't expected that at all. Some of those numbers were absolutely insane. 10, 000 durability? What would that even look like? Did that mean that the previous limit was 5, 000?
If the suggested amounts truly represented what a normal mage would experience during their level up, did that mean someone out there had a durability of 5, 000? Were they made of steel? The healing stat max was up there, too. A max healing stat of 2, 000 would have given her the ability to heal almost seventy times as quickly as she did now. The leg injury that took a week and a half to heal would have only taken a few hours to heal completely, which was wild.
She really wanted to put points into quite a few of these stats, but recognized that the whole reason she had purchased [Limit Breaker] was so that she could keep up with someone who used their aura to debilitate her. She did rationalize a little bit though. While it would be cool to just dump everything in Strength and see how fast she could run, she knew that she needed her Mind stat to go up as well so she could mentally parse what was happening at those speeds.
Also, giving up 20 points from Strength wouldn't have a huge impact on her speed, while putting 20 points into Sleep Fatigue Resistance would have an outsized impact on her life. The same could be said for a small improvement to her Healing stat. Avoiding injuries was ideal, but not always possible, and an improved recovery time might literally save her life if it kept her from bleeding out somewhere. After some deliberation, she spent the remaining 279 points.
Unspent Points: +0 Strength: 300 => 450/600 Mind: 100 => 150/200 Endurance: 58 => 70/400 Healing: 32 => 60/4000 Sleep Fatigue Resistance: 22 => 40/400 Food / nourishment requirement: 22/200 Durability: 109 => 130/10000 Life Expectancy: 67/3000 She was quite tempted to spend her remaining reward point on [Upgrade Stats (tier-based)], just to get another 290 points to spend, but decided against it.
If those new max limit numbers were to be believed, the amount of points she earned at each tier would just keep going up, which meant buying that reward now would likely be a monumental waste in the future. Also, if the tier 4 upgrade would take two years, she didn't want to imagine how long the tier 5 upgrade would take. If she was going to purchase that [Guaranteed Advancement] reward for tier 5, she might as well buy it for tier 4, and save herself an extra year.
She juggled that idea around in her mind for a bit, before finally deciding to go for it. After purchasing it, she checked all of her World Engine pages one last time. Class: As things tend to malfunction when you are around, you have been granted the class of Anti-Mage. Basic magic won't affect you in the same way it does other people.
