Ash's finger came down on the projection key. The instant the main screen lit up, it felt like someone had shoved a blue-white sun straight into everyone's eyes.
"… Fuck." I swore, quietly. Not out of ignorance. Pure physiological reflex. Because the thing really was that bright. The third planet hung in the center of the main display, glowing with a blue-white light that felt almost sacred — and instinctively wrong. Not simply beautiful. The kind of beautiful that reads as a bad omen.
Like someone had thrown an entire planet into the field of view of a sick blue giant and left it there, letting the radiation burn it layer by layer until it glowed, until it warped, until even its horizon stopped looking like a horizon. The distant arc of the planet was moving. Not a rendering glitch. The planet's own gravitational field was actually shifting. The whole horizon rippled up and down like a slow wave — slow enough to make it worse, because you could tell, clearly, that this wasn't wind. Wasn't cloud.
Wasn't ordinary geological activity. This was space itself deciding it wasn't particularly interested in following the rules today. Overhead, bands of blue-white fracture cut across the sky, like someone had taken a massive blade to the heavens and packed the cracks full of cold electric light. No clouds. No weather in any normal sense. The whole upper atmosphere looked like something invisible had torn it open and left it permanently one step short of shattering.
Akari layered environmental markers over the projection.
"Third target: provisional classification, extreme-instability active indium planet," she said.
"Temporary designation: Chromatic-3."
"What an uninspired name," Jess said, chin in hand.
"You have a better one?"
"Sure.
'Whoever Goes Down There Is Out of Their Mind, Number Three.'"" Motion denied." Ash didn't even look up. I almost laughed and forced it back down. Good — the bridge air hadn't gone fully unbreathable yet. The second I looked back at the screen, though, that scrap of relief got swallowed whole by the planet itself.
Across the surface, columns of high-intensity blue light punched straight up between mountain ranges and mining zones, like someone had yanked the planet's bones out from underground and left its glowing nerves exposed. Akari zoomed in on one of the columns. The ground around its base was scored with twisted metallic-blue lines — part ore vein, part the glowing vasculature of something enormous that had died here a long time ago.
"Primary resources confirmed," Akari continued.
"Active indium, pure ferrite, and storm crystal formed under extreme gravitational-storm conditions. Also two special contaminants, currently flagged as Living Stain and gravity particulate. The former exhibits unknown activity. The latter interferes with local mass distribution and instrument calibration."
"Translate that into human speech." Harvey wasn't on the bridge, so this time Roy took the lead. Akari flipped to the next data layer without blinking.
"Translated: even the dust down there might have more opinions than you do."
"Good translation," D said. The main display switched to a storm simulation. And then I watched an entire mountain fly. … No, not hyperbole. It actually flew. In the feed, a gravity storm swept across the edge of a mining zone. Boulders, mining debris, even half a cliff face that had been sitting solid on the ground lit up with a thin blue sheen, then rose — like something invisible and enormous was slowly lifting the whole mass by the scruff of its neck.
The next second, wind speed at altitude spiked, and everything suspended got torn apart mid-air, the debris shredding into an unnaturally bright metallic stardust that swept away along the warped currents. Watching it, I found myself thinking the toxic planet from yesterday looked almost polite by comparison. At least the toxic planet was upfront about how it wanted to kill you. Not this one.
This one was the kind of bastard that would make you say wow, that's beautiful right before pressing you into the ground along with the thought, or flinging you into the sky to be shredded.
"Atmospheric conditions: extremely violent," Akari said.
"Blue giant radiation has been shredding the upper structure continuously. Extreme supergravity storms are present around the clock. At storm peak, local wind speed exceeds the speed of sound and the gravitational field destabilizes in tandem. Simply put: on this planet, you don't just have to worry about being blown away. You have to worry about going weightless, and then suddenly weighing enough to drop you to your knees." Lan pulled up the gravity coefficients.
The second the numbers appeared, even my scalp went tight. 0. 2G ~ 4. 5G.
"…This isn't a gravity table. This is a betting spread," I said.
"Yeah," Jess drawled.
"And the house clearly doesn't plan on letting us walk out alive." Ash finally spoke.
"So this time we're not playing for endurance." He split the main display into task panes — blue ore veins, high-storm zones, predicted stability windows, surface route simulations, extraction sequences — all open at once.
"This one is fast, precise, and ruthless. There's no second approach." He pointed to one of the surface mining zones. Three distinct active-indium eruption veins there, blue spikes driven up from the planet's core like glowing bone-pins, bright enough to hurt to look at. The terrain around them had been battered by gravity waves until it looked half-melted and recast — dislocated rock strata, half-floating debris everywhere. Stolen story; please report.
"This is what finishes fueling the Kamikaze," Ash said.
"Active indium." I heard someone nearby draw a quiet breath. Not because anyone didn't know its value. Because everyone knew exactly how much it was worth. Right now the Yukikaze was a patient held together on stubbornness and improvised repairs. The first two planets had given us blood — the bare-minimum resources to keep the ship from falling apart mid-transit. The third one was different. The third one was — our ticket to actually leave this sector. Ash's tone stayed flat.
"Once this batch is in, engineering can start swapping the old Next-Gen Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion Boiler for the new Helium-Hydrogen Power Plant. Active indium goes into the Kamikaze for final-stage warp-fuel conditioning." With Harvey off the bridge, a comm window opened from the engine room. The moment Chief Engineer Borodin's face filled the lower corner, I felt the weight of it settle in — this is actually moving forward.
Borodin didn't usually show up front-and-center in a briefing unless whatever came next was important enough to make the engine room look up from its own crises. Behind him, a full reactor maintenance gantry stood open, piping hanging like exposed viscera, red and yellow warning lights blinking. The feed was loud with the particular dignity of serious engineering work in progress.
"Harvey's with me," Borodin said, his voice like something dragged across sandpaper.
"He's not going to the surface today. I need him watching the old-core teardown and calibrating the new plant's interface. Misalign one coupler on this thing, and we're not doing point-to-point jumps. We're doing point-to-point detonations."
"Thank you, as always, for the morale boost," Ash said.
"You're welcome," Borodin said, entirely straight-faced.
"I just want you all to remember, while you're down there grabbing rocks, that what I'm doing up here isn't arts and crafts." A shape flickered in the corner of the feed — Harvey, peering out from behind a stack of disassembled modules, calibration slate in hand, wearing the expression of a man who was technically an extraction engineer and currently felt like he was assisting at the birth of a reactor. He spotted us and raised a hand.
"For the record, I'm not skipping the surface because I'm scared. I'm skipping it because the engine room currently has a higher statistical need for my precious brain than the ground does."
"Relax," Jess said.
"We've always known you're happiest standing next to things that explode."
"Is that a compliment or a curse?"
"Depends on your performance." A few short laughs crossed the bridge. Even Borodin made a sound that, by human standards, probably counted as agreement. Ash pulled the display back to the mission window.
"Second target: storm crystal." The feed switched to another simulation. At the peak of a gravity storm, certain old rock fissures would suddenly erupt with intensely bright blue crystal — like lightning that had grown a body on the ground. Not small clusters. Full-length crystal columns that ripped whole out of the cracks in under a second, bright enough to look like the planet's entire static charge had frozen into bone.
"These only form at maximum storm intensity, when gravitational shear peaks," Akari said.
"The window is short, the location isn't fixed, and formation zones frequently coincide with gravity inversion."
"Translate," I said. Akari looked at me.
"Translated: you have to jump out of the vehicle and start hitting rock at exactly the moment you're most likely to get thrown into the sky or flattened into a pancake."
"…If Federal taxpayers knew what their money was buying, they'd probably cry."
"Wrong," D said, leaning against a bulkhead.
"If they knew what this stuff could do, they'd cry harder and tell us to bring back two more columns." I didn't want to admit it, but he wasn't wrong. Because Ash's next line finished the argument for him.
"Storm crystal feeds into the top-tier antimatter core material sequence," he said.
"With it, the Yukikaze doesn't just get a new engine that works. She gets a complete system that can jump, can push hard, and won't burn herself out doing it." The bridge went quiet for a few seconds. Ash didn't let it sit long. He raised a hand and pulled the gravity-stability window to the center.
"Only one thing matters here," he said.
"Everyone remember it: this planet isn't for playing hero. It only accepts precision." Several predicted paths lit up at once.
"Extraction team waits for the brief safe window when gravity drops to its minimum, then drives the all-terrain vehicles straight into the active-indium eruption band. Shimo, you're on window assessment and surface gravity-wave correction. Akari watches the model with you. The instant the numbers are off by half a beat, pull the team back. No hesitation."
"Understood," I said.
"First-wave field team: me, D, Maki." Ash kept going down the list.
"Roy on near-orbital standby. Lan on retrieval-vector correction. Jess stays on the bridge — comm delay, gravity particulate interference, secondary storm warnings." Jess raised an eyebrow.
"I figured you'd tie me to a medbay cot."
"I considered it," Ash said.
"But a cot doesn't argue back. The auxiliary console does."
"Deeply moving. I lost to a piece of furniture."
"You can survive to retirement and process that at your leisure." I couldn't help glancing at Jess. She felt it, turned, and our eyes met exactly. No sharp mouth. No raised eyebrow. None of the Acting Captain, want me to help you revisit your life choices today look. She just tapped two fingers against her earpiece and gave me a small, clean gesture. Got it covered. … This woman being suddenly, inexplicably professional was somehow more unsettling than when she'd kissed me yesterday.
I turned back to the display, expression blank, pretending I hadn't received anything at all. Maki stood beside me, saying nothing. But I knew she'd seen it too. Because when I flipped to the next surface cross-section, she quietly enlarged one of the blurred gravity-wave boundaries for me.
"Here," she said, low.
"If the 4. 5G rolls outward from this fissure line, the vehicle can't cut straight through. It'll get pinned." I looked at the segment she'd marked, and my mind locked onto it on instinct.
"Then we ride the two-second low-G rebound window and slide in from the side slope…"
"Yes," she said. Just that. Flat. Short. And my heart still, with zero dignity, tripped over itself once. Damn it. Last night clearly didn't come with a sleep once, reset to factory function. Ash ignored whatever was going on in our corner of the bridge — entirely counterproductive to clean analysis — and kept going.
"One more risk factor. Living Stain." The main display cut to a low-altitude recon feed. A slab of rock lay smeared with something that looked like an oil film but moved, slowly — a dark blue smear clinging in patches near high-energy deposit zones, like something reluctant to admit it was still alive, but demonstrably was. My brow furrowed instantly.
"Who named this?"
"Provisional descriptor," Akari said.
"It looks like a stain, but it shows active response to radiation and gravity shifts."
"Translated into military speak, does that mean 'we have no idea what the hell it is, but it's definitely not friendly'?"
"Yes." Wonderful. This ship kept getting more honest by the day. Ash closed the file.
"Not a primary recovery target. Avoid it, mark it, burn it if necessary," he said.
"Our mission isn't to catalog the artistic expression of a hostile planet. Our mission is to bring back the active indium and the storm crystal, and get the Yukikaze started on her reactor swap." That sentence landed and the whole briefing found its spine. Not exploration. Not discovery. Not a romantic encounter with the unknown. Grab it. Get back. Swap the core. Jump out. Simple, brutal, and very Yukikaze. Borodin's feed coughed once in the corner.
"One thing from my end." Ash looked over. The old engineer rested his wrench against his shoulder, tone as flat as if he were discussing whether to add salt to lunch.
"Bring back this last batch of active indium, and I can retire that old boiler," he said.
"Once the new plant lights, the Yukikaze isn't just stubborn scrap crawling forward on spite anymore. We'll be doing real point-to-point jumps." He paused half a second, as if giving everyone time to feel the weight of that.
"So don't die," he said.
"…That's a wonderfully unadorned pep talk," I muttered.
"Effective is enough," D said. Right. Effective was enough. Ash collapsed every window into one overview. That blue-white, glowing catastrophe of a planet filled the main screen again, silently telling us: Come on, then. Come and take it, if you can. Ash looked at the display, voice dropping a register.
"This is the last one," he said. Nobody on the bridge spoke. Because everyone understood the part left unsaid. Get through this. The Yukikaze gets her new core. New core, and we stop crawling forward one segment at a time. I stared at that glowing, sick planet and let out a slow breath. Last night was still there. So was this morning's awkwardness, the medbay numbers, Maki's hand at my collar, Jess's uncharacteristic quiet retreat. But in this moment, all of it very clearly stepped back into place. Not gone.
Just yielding. Yielding to the planet ahead. Yielding to the Yukikaze. Yielding to the thing we'd fought this far to almost touch — the possibility of going home. I pulled the risk sequence to the main console, fingers tapping open the first surface gravity-wave prediction.
"All right," I said.
"Let's see how this glowing lunatic of a planet plans to kill us today." Jess laughed softly.
"Now that's more spirit, Act—" She stopped, half a beat, like something had occurred to her — and rerouted.
"—Lieutenant Hoshino." I glanced over at her. She was leaning against the auxiliary console, the corner of her mouth curved faintly, and said nothing more. Maki, beside me, added, low:"Don't let it succeed." I didn't look at her. Just opened the second model layer, holding down the entirely inappropriate curve at the corner of my own mouth.
"Obviously."
